序章 真心话大冒险

Prologue: Truth or Dare

Truth or Dare was played in the last row of an empty classroom. The penalty was usually a trip to the convenience store for ice cream.

That day the spinner stopped on “Confess to Nanjo Makoto.” The whole class went “Ooooh,” like they were watching fireworks.

Kirino Aoi stood up and felt as if her chair were still stuck to her. Nanjo sat by the window. His notes were written in neat lines, and he was not looking at her.

“I like you,” she said, in a voice so clear she hated it herself. “Game over.”

It should have been over. Laughter would wash the sentence away.

Nanjo looked up, watched her for two seconds, and nodded. “Oh.”

第一章 我喜欢你,游戏结束

Chapter 1: I Like You. Game Over.

“Oh” was not an acceptable answer, and it was harder to deal with than a refusal.

After class, Aoi went to find Nanjo, ready to announce that it had only been a penalty game. Nanjo handed her a borrowed reference book—she could not even remember when she had left it on his desk.

“I know,” he said. “The spinner was loud.”

“Then let’s pretend it never happened.”

“But you said you like me.” Nanjo lined up the spine of the book. “And I said oh. Oh means: I accept. By the rules, the game has already turned into a date.”

For the first time Aoi felt that, beyond the school rules, there was a more troublesome set of rules, written by this unremarkable boy.

第二章 他居然点头了

Chapter 2: He Actually Nodded

He actually nodded. That fact spread through the grade even faster than the confession itself.

Someone asked Aoi, “Are you two really dating?” She said, “No.” Someone asked Nanjo, and Nanjo said, “Yes.” The two answers appeared side by side in the same day’s hallway, like two notices locked in a fight.

“Why did you say yes?” Aoi cornered him.

“Because you never said, ‘I take it back.’” He opened an umbrella—it was not raining that day; the sunlight was only too white. “The terms of the penalty game have no automatic expiration.”

“You studied the terms?”

“I copied down the spinner’s rules.” He took out a slip of paper, the handwriting neat. “Article Three: The person who accepts the confession has the right to extend the game until the other party ends it out loud.”

Aoi snatched the slip. On the back was a bento menu with the cilantro she hated crossed out. The date was last week.

第三章 校门口的等待

Chapter 3: Waiting at the School Gate

From that day on, Nanjo appeared at the school gate.

He did not block the way. He stood a little to the left, as if waiting for weather that would arrive late. When Aoi tried to pass on the right, he still took her bag, the motion so natural that bystanders had nothing to tease.

“This is heavy,” she said.

“Liking someone is heavy to begin with,” Nanjo answered evenly. “The game only set the weight on the table ahead of time.”

Aoi stared at his profile and suddenly did not know whether the spinner had stopped on that square by chance, or because someone had lightly touched the edge with a finger.

She did not ask. If she asked, it would become another confession.

第一章 香菜与伞

Chapter 1: Cilantro and an Umbrella

Nanjo remembered that she hated cilantro. He also remembered that, in the rain, she disliked the road lined with trees, because water gathered on the leaves and came down in hard drops.

When he held the umbrella out to her, Aoi did not take it. The umbrella stayed between them, like a transparent border.

“What if this isn’t a game?” she heard herself ask.

“Then I would have stood at the school gate sooner,” he said. “Only no one spun the wheel that time.”

The rain grew heavier. Aoi reached out and took the handle. Her fingers touched his. The weight of the penalty suddenly became concrete—so concrete she did not want to give it back.

第二章 如果这不是游戏

Chapter 2: If This Isn’t a Game

The class organized Truth or Dare again. Aoi held the spinner down.

“We’re not spinning today.” She looked at Nanjo. “Terms updated. I like you. This isn’t a game.”

The classroom was quiet for one second. Then someone started cheering. Nanjo did not say “Oh.” He only folded the slip of paper with the copied rules and put it at the very bottom of his pencil case.

“Accepted.” This time he said the word in full.

After school, his place at the gate moved from a little to the left to dead center. When Aoi walked over, she no longer thought of going around on the right.
