Chapter 1 The Room Keys

Chapter 1 The Room Keys

September in Qingdao had not quite given summer up. The sea was bright. The wind already found the open collar and came in with a damp chill. When Chen Hao lifted the suitcase out of the taxi trunk, Xu Siyi was standing under the revolving door of Tingchao Hotel, looking at her phone. A corner of her black coat lifted in the wind. She was thirty-one, a corporate account manager at a bank. In a new place she confirmed the checkout time and the breakfast cutoff before she would look at the sea.

"Twelfth floor. 1208." She put the phone away. "Did you read the reviews when you booked? Someone said the soundproofing is only average."

"I read them." Chen Hao handed the suitcase to the bellman and carried her laptop bag himself. He was thirty-four, a sales manager at a medical-device company in Shanghai. Most of his talking had been trained into him by the job. Silence was something he had only just, in the last two years, managed to learn. They had been married six years. Annual leave was cut into short pieces. This piece had been Xu Siyi's idea. She had said that if they did not open a room with a view of the sea, the only conversation left between them would be reimbursements, parcels, and who showered first.

The lobby was pale stone. There was a faint smell of citrus in the air-conditioning. The woman at the desk took their two identity cards, tapped the keyboard, then stopped and looked to their left.

A man had his elbows on the counter. The cuffs of his dark gray shirt were rolled to the middle of his forearms. He looked about thirty-six, broad through the shoulders, with the color of someone who had been outdoors. Beside him stood a woman in a beige knit dress, her hair loosely pinned, her earrings very small. She smiled first, as if the little confusion were not worth anyone getting nervous over.

"Lin Zheng." The man nodded at Chen Hao. His voice was not loud. "Ours is 1210. The envelopes probably got swapped."

The clerk apologized more than once, rewrote the room numbers, and pushed two black cards into paper sleeves. Xu Siyi saw her own room number pause for a second beside Lin Zheng's hand, then get drawn back. The hand was steady. There was a little old callus on the knuckles. It was not a hand that only held a mouse all day.

"If nobody had noticed," the woman said suddenly, her voice clear, "we'd have slept in the wrong rooms tonight."

She looked at Xu Siyi. It was not a provocation. She had set a joke down on the counter to see whether anyone would take it up. Xu Siyi's eyebrows moved.

"We'd have to see first whether the minibar has water I can drink," she said.

All four of them laughed. When the laugh ended, a thin thread stayed in the air.

The woman added, "Gu Wanning. From Hangzhou. He's my husband."

Going up in the elevator, no one hunted for more talk. The corridor on the twelfth floor was deep blue carpet. Footsteps were eaten. 1208 and 1210 faced each other. Between them there was only a fire hose cabinet and a painting of a sailboat. Chen Hao opened their door and stepped aside to let his wife in. At the edge of his sight, Gu Wanning had already opened the door opposite. Before she went in she turned and said to Xu Siyi, "There's no one in the bar downstairs until after seven. If you come down, we can finish that joke. Or we can talk about something else."

"We'll see," Xu Siyi said.

The two doors closed, one after the other.

The sea in the room was closer than the lobby had promised. Beyond the glass was the last stretch of Golden Beach. In the middle of September there were not many people. Someone was walking a dog on the wet sand. Xu Siyi hung up her coat and went into the bathroom first to wash off the dust of the road. When she came out, Chen Hao had changed his shirt and was standing at the window.

"You looked at her," she said.

"You looked at him too."

"I looked at his hands." Xu Siyi sat on the edge of the bed and took her earrings off into a small dish. "A very dull observation. And you?"

Chen Hao did not answer at once. There were only the two of them in the room. Wrapping the truth would have looked false.

"She talks straight," he said. "Straight enough that you want the next sentence."

Xu Siyi made a sound. It was not anger. It was confirmation that she had heard. "Sixth year of marriage, and you finally admit in front of me that you looked at someone else. Call it progress."

"And you?"

She took off her boat shoes. The socks were thin. Her toes curled once against the carpet. "When he looked at me he didn't look away. That doesn't happen often. Most men either don't dare look, or they look and then pretend they were looking at the sea. I'm not saying I'm going to do anything. I'm telling you I noticed."

They stood at the window for a while. In the evening the sea turned a heavy blue. The lighthouse was not lit yet. Chen Hao put his arms around her waist from behind and set his chin against her hair. He had done this countless times. Today it felt like checking a size. This was still his wife. Her shoulders were a little thinner than he remembered. The perfume was the same bottle. Under his palm her heartbeat was steady.

"Go down?" he asked.

"Shower first. Then go down. If they're not there, we treat it as our own holiday."

"And if they are?"

Xu Siyi turned her face and kissed his wrist. "Then we drink. A joke can stay a joke."

After she went into the bathroom he was still at the window. The balcony door opposite was open a crack. A white sheer was pulled out by the wind and snapped back. He saw a short length of Lin Zheng's arm setting a bottle of water on the railing. Drops ran down the glass. Chen Hao took his eyes back and felt ridiculous. A man of thirty-four should not have his heart jump over a stranger's hand and a curtain.

But the jump was real. He noted it, to tell Xu Siyi in a little while. Over the years they had not been without other heartbeats. They had only grown used to pressing a heartbeat back down, pressing it into weekdays, pressing it until neither of them would say it first.

Water started in the bathroom. He took off his shoes, plugged in both chargers, and folded her scarf onto the chair. The actions were small. Small enough to be saying to himself: you still have a wife, you still have an evening to get through together, do not turn the day into a fantasy in the first hour.

Chapter 2 What Can't Be Decided After Drinking

Chapter 2 What Can't Be Decided After Drinking

The bar was on the west side of the hotel. Past the door was a wooden boardwalk, and under the planks the tide hit the pilings in rounds. The evening of the eighteenth of September was not cold, but the wind still got into clothes. Xu Siyi put her scarf on. Lin Zheng and Gu Wanning were already at a table by the sea. In front of them were two glasses of soda. No alcohol.

"We've been waiting twenty minutes," Gu Wanning said. "Not to rush you. I bet you would come. He bet you wouldn't."

"Who won?" Chen Hao pulled a chair out.

"She did." Lin Zheng said, "So the first round is mine. Only the first round. After that we each pay our own, so it doesn't turn into some other meaning."

Before he ordered he asked how much each person drank, and whether anyone wanted food. Xu Siyi asked for a dry white. Chen Hao wanted beer. Gu Wanning later changed to whiskey with ice. Lin Zheng drank beer himself, and drank it slowly. The four of them first finished the parts of their lives that could be said in public. Chen Hao talked about sales targets, about machines he was not allowed into the operating room to see, only to wait outside the door for a doctor to nod. Xu Siyi talked about corporate clients, about a boss who had called her proposal something a little girl wrote. She had read the contract clauses back to him one by one, and after that he called her Manager Xu. Lin Zheng was a structural engineer, in Qingdao to look at the joints of a waterfront commercial complex. The project had been stopped for half a year. The client was still changing the facade. Gu Wanning worked on her own as a buyer, choosing clothes for a few small shops, and also keeping afternoons when she did not work.

"Hangzhou," she said. "An old compound. Stairs, no elevator. Hot in summer. You're in Shanghai?"

"Xuhui," Xu Siyi said. "Elevator building. Summer is hot there too. When the heat is done you get on the subway."

Halfway through the drinks, a young couple in matching clothes walked the boardwalk, laughing loudly. Gu Wanning touched her temple with the rim of her glass.

"When I said at the desk that we might sleep in the wrong rooms, you didn't take it as an insult, did you?"

"No," Chen Hao said.

"A little," Xu Siyi said at the same time.

The other three looked at her. She turned her glass. Wine slid down the inside. "The insult isn't the joke. It's that after the joke was said, nobody really threw it away. Including me."

Lin Zheng looked at Gu Wanning. In the look was something only a long marriage has. Not a prohibition. It was: I know which way you are going.

Gu Wanning did not look at her husband. She looked at Xu Siyi. "I've been married eight years. I'm not here to find a replacement. Neither is he. The year before last we took a very bad trip. The whole way we argued over who was more tired. After we came back we agreed that if something needed saying on a trip, we would finish saying it on the trip and not carry it home to ferment. So I'm used to saying a thing until it sounds ridiculous, to see if it can still stand up."

"Swapping room keys doesn't stand up," Chen Hao said. The smile was short.

"Of course it doesn't." Gu Wanning smiled too. "So it can only be a joke. Unless all four people are sober, all married, and all willing to put the ugly part in front. I haven't met that. Today probably won't be it either."

The wind blew a strand of her hair onto her lip. She brushed it aside. Chen Hao saw the gesture and moved his eyes back to his beer. Xu Siyi saw him look away. The sourness in her was clearer than when he had been staring. It was not anger. It was like lemon on the tongue, a reminder that taste was still working.

Lin Zheng asked, all at once, "When your husband looks at my wife, does it hurt?"

The peanuts on the table went quiet for a second. Chen Hao opened his mouth to explain. Xu Siyi lifted a hand and stopped him.

"It hurts," she said. "And it's clear. Clear is more useful than pretending to be fine. So I'll ask you. When I look at your hands, does your wife hurt?"

Gu Wanning bit a piece of ice in two. Her voice was light. "It hurts. I still let her look. His hands are his. They are not my property. If you turn a marriage into property, going to sleep at night feels like counting stock."

"Wanning," Lin Zheng said, low.

"I'm speaking for myself." She nodded once at her husband, to show she had taken the reminder. "I'm not entering you in anything."

After the second round the talk got smooth. Lin Zheng told them about a young supervisor on a site who had read a reinforcement drawing the wrong way around. Gu Wanning did the voice of a client on the phone. Xu Siyi laughed until she put her face into her scarf. When she finished laughing she leaned on Chen Hao's shoulder. The lean was habit. Today it was also being shown to the people across the table, and to herself.

Chen Hao heard himself say, "Suppose. Only suppose. The keys really changed for three nights, and going home we treated it as if nothing had happened. A suppose like that is already rotten the moment you say it."

"Rotten," Lin Zheng agreed.

"Because you've had two drinks," Xu Siyi said. "So have I. People who have been drinking cannot decide this. Whoever settles it now, I'll treat him as a man behaving badly."

Gu Wanning raised her glass. "Agreed. Tonight stops here. The joke is taken back. Tomorrow, if anyone still remembers, we say it again at a table with no alcohol. If anyone doesn't remember, the sea wind took it."

Glass touched glass, a thin sound.

Back in 1208, Xu Siyi rinsed her mouth first. The wine had faded. She was still warm. Chen Hao sat on the bed undoing his watch. She came out and stood between his knees. The hem of her skirt crossed his hand.

"You're hard," she said.

"A little, from the moment she pushed her hair back. I'm not lying."

"Don't be sorry that fast." Xu Siyi pulled her skirt up and sat on his thighs. They knew this place. The body found the angle on its own. She did not take her underwear off. She only moved against him through the cloth, slowly. Chen Hao's breath thickened. He kissed her and tasted toothpaste and a little wine that had not quite left.

"We are not deciding," she said into the kiss.

"We aren't."

"But I want to. With you. Now."

He put her on the bed. The sea outside the window could not be seen. Only the sound remained. He knew her body. A small mole under the left breast. A place at the side of the waist that could not bear tickling. When he entered she usually held his back, and her legs did not close very hard. Tonight she closed hard. Chen Hao stopped and looked at her eyes.

"Who are you thinking about?"

Xu Siyi flushed, and she did not hide the flush. "You. And also whether, if it were another person, I would still know myself. That thought makes me want you more. Can you stand hearing something that ugly?"

"I can." His throat was dry. "Because I'm the same."

They did it. It was not the ordinary sex before sleep, the kind in which you can ask, while you are at it, what time to get up. Chen Hao went in slowly. Each stroke reached the place that made her take a small breath. Xu Siyi opened her knees. Her heels pressed his waist. She kept her voice down, as if she were afraid the room across the hall would hear. The thought of that room made her body draw in, and then she was wetter. She hated how quickly she had gotten wet, and the hatred made her more aroused. Chen Hao felt it. He bent and took her nipple in his mouth. The flat of his tongue pressed that point and circled. She swore, very softly, and put her fingers into his hair.

"Don't stop."

He did not stop. His hand under her lifted her a little so he could go deeper. Her orgasm came quicker than it usually did. She bit his shoulder. The tops of her thighs shook. Inside, she clenched in pulses. He had meant to wait. The clenching was too honest, and he came with it. When he came he said her name. Xu Siyi heard it. Her eyes went hot.

They did not pull apart at once. He was still inside her. Both of them were sweating. The air-conditioning cooled the sweat. She touched the back of his neck.

"If they don't bring it up tomorrow, neither do we."

"All right."

"If they do, we finish saying it between ourselves before we say it to them. Being persuaded doesn't count. You have to want it yourself."

Chen Hao kissed her eyelid. "Do you want it now? Not me. That suppose."

She looked at the smoke detector on the ceiling for a long time. "I want to know whether we only know how to live one kind of day. That answer doesn't have to be paid for with other people. But I'm thirty-one. I don't want to drag curiosity until it becomes regret. I'm afraid. The fear is real. So is the curiosity. No vote tonight."

"No vote tonight," he said again.

The door opposite sounded then, as if someone had gone out for ice and come straight back. Both of them went still. In the stillness there was jealousy, and a laugh, and a clarity the sea made very large.

Chen Hao pulled out, tied the condom, and dropped it in the bin. He ran hot water in the bathroom, wrung a towel, and came back to wipe her stomach and the insides of her thighs. Xu Siyi watched him and said, suddenly, "If you really sleep with someone else tomorrow, you do this too. You don't finish and go shower and leave the person on the bed."

"You're already making law for tomorrow."

"I'm making law for myself." She took the towel and wiped his stomach as well. "Whatever happens tomorrow, tonight you are my husband. That gets said, and it stays said."

He lay down beside her. They listened to the tide. Her hand rested on his chest. Her fingertips moved a little with his heartbeat. She did not speak again. When she was silent, her body was still turned toward him. Chen Hao took that as a temporary answer and put it away with care.

Chapter 3 Writing the Rules on Paper

Chapter 3 Writing the Rules on Paper

The next morning they both woke early. The wine had gone. Their mouths were a little dry. Xu Siyi opened the curtains first. In clear weather the sea was pale. Near the shore you could see the pattern of sand under the water. She took the hotel notepad and a pen to the small table and sat down without looking at Chen Hao.

"I remember," she said.

"So do I."

"Then we go out and walk. While we walk we only talk about the two of us. If we meet them we say hello. We don't open it up."

They walked west along Golden Beach. The September sun was still strong enough to burn. The wind made a mess of Xu Siyi's hair. Chen Hao reached for her hand. She put both hands in her coat pockets first, walked a dozen steps, then took one out herself and closed it around his fingers.

"I'll say what I'm afraid of first." She looked at the rocks ahead. "I'm afraid that after you've done it, the way you look at her will be softer than the way you look at me. I'm afraid that after I've done it I won't want to come back. I'm afraid we'll use this to prove the marriage is already empty, and pretend we're only playing. I'm also afraid they aren't as serious as we are, and we'll look like two fools who asked for it."

"I'm afraid I won't be any good," Chen Hao said. "Sales can be talked up. In bed you can't talk it up. I'm afraid you'll be more comfortable with someone else and won't tell me when you come back. I'm afraid that when I'm jealous I'll say something filthy, and once it's said I won't be able to take it back. I'm also afraid that I want it, and I'm using your curiosity as the excuse."

Xu Siyi stopped. The sea wind broke her voice a little. "So if we do it, it can't be to save the marriage, and it can't be to punish the marriage. It can only be because both of us want to know, and we're willing to live with the days after we know."

"Do you want to know? Now. Sober."

She nodded, a small nod. "I do. After I know, I may regret it. If I don't know, I'll regret that too. Of the two harms, I choose the one I can say out loud."

"I want to know too," Chen Hao said. "I choose you. That isn't a line for the occasion. Even if the keys really change, I still go home with you. If that can't be said and kept before anything else, I don't swap."

Xu Siyi looked at him for a good ten seconds, then put her forehead against his shoulder. "All right. Then we go and hear how they say it. If all they want is a thrill, we eat and we leave. We have thrills at home. We just haven't been very good at using them lately."

At ten in the morning the four of them met at a seafood stall behind the hotel. No one had formally invited anyone. Lin Zheng had run into them on the beach and said Gu Wanning had already taken a table toward the back, and did they want to sit together. Xu Siyi looked at Chen Hao. Chen Hao said yes.

Plastic sheeting divided the booths. Outside, the steam from the pots was heavy. Inside it was quieter. A steamer, gloves for peeling shrimp, a pot of chrysanthemum tea. No one ordered alcohol. Gu Wanning wore a white shirt today. Her hair was down. She looked younger than last night, and less polite.

"We remember," she said first. "So we won't pretend we forgot. I don't know all of Lin Zheng's opinion. I'll say mine. I'm thirty-three. I love my husband. I want him. In the last two years the wanting has gotten polite, polite enough to feel like a guest. I want, inside a range we've agreed, to sleep with someone else for three nights. When it's done I go back to Hangzhou, back to the walk-up. I don't want anything long-term. I don't accept photographs. I don't accept changing the rules after drinking. My period ended four days ago. I have an IUD. We still use condoms. Anyone who wants it without one can walk out now."

Lin Zheng's hands stopped on a shrimp, then went on. His ears were red. His voice was steady. "I'm thirty-six. I love her too. I agree with the lines she drew. I'll add two of my own. First, any time someone says stop, we stop. We don't stop in order to ask why. Why waits until the clothes are back on. Second, we don't evaluate our own spouse in front of the other person. In bed you can say what you like. You cannot say your husband has never done it this way. That kind of sentence hurts, and it's often a lie."

Chen Hao felt the back of his shirt go damp. He finished his tea before he spoke. "I'm thirty-four. She's thirty-one. We've been married six years. Last night we said drinking doesn't count. I'm sober now. I want to try. I'm afraid. I want us, every morning, to go back to our own room first, finish talking with our own spouse, and only then go downstairs to see the other two. If anyone hides physical discomfort, or hides that they want to stop, that's a breach."

Xu Siyi spread the notepad open. Her handwriting had been trained in a bank. Fast, clear, without decoration. "I'll write. When it's written, each person reads it alone and says yes or no. A couple cannot agree as a package."

The page filled. Three nights, from tonight through the night after next, ending on the morning of checkout. Sex only in these two rooms. In public, no kissing, no touching with intent, no talk a bystander could understand. Key cards could be exchanged. Doors could be locked from the inside. The safe word was nothing else. It was "stop." The person who said stop did not have to explain. The other person stopped the movement at once, offered water, and waited while the first decided whether to end or to change the way. Kissing was allowed, because all four of them felt that not kissing would be falser. Oral sex was allowed. Penetration required a condom. Ejaculation stayed in the condom. Not on the face, not inside the body. Anal sex was outside this agreement. If someone wanted it in the moment, they had to ask separately, and the other person could refuse without owing an explanation. Phones stayed in the original rooms. No pictures. No recordings. If a mark needed covering, it was covered. It was not shown off.

Every morning there would be one debrief between spouses, no shorter than twenty minutes. Jealousy was allowed in the debrief. Insults were not. When the four of them ate together they could talk about how they felt, but a partner's privacy was not a joke. If any one person changed their mind before any night began, the whole exchange paused. It did not pause for that one person only. After a pause they could talk again. No one would be pressed back in.

At the end Xu Siyi's pen stopped, then she added a line. This is not a love affair. No one says I love you. If something like that appears in the mind, it is told to one's own spouse, not to the other person.

Gu Wanning read it and let out a soft breath. "You're harder than I am."

"I'm afraid of myself," Xu Siyi said. "So I wrote it hard."

Lin Zheng took the paper and went through it line by line. He asked, "What if someone cries in the middle?"

"Stop first," Xu Siyi said. "Crying can be pleasure. It can also be something wrong. If you can't tell, you stop. Holding is allowed. Going on has to wait until the person says they still want it."

Chen Hao asked, "What if halfway through I find I can't?"

Gu Wanning looked at him and did not look away. "Then we stop and kiss, or talk, or you help me and I help you. Penetration is not required. Not being able isn't a breach. Pretending you can is."

Xu Siyi asked a harder one. "Do we stay in contact afterward?"

All four were quiet for a moment. Steam in the pot pushed at the lid and made a small sound.

Lin Zheng said, "I suggest no contact for thirty days. After thirty days, if both couples are willing, one message to say we're all right. If not, it ends there. We don't exchange WeChat tonight. We don't exchange addresses. What we said yesterday about work is enough."

"Agreed," Chen Hao said.

Gu Wanning turned the pen once. "Then we don't vote now. Voting too fast would feel like a signing. We separate for the afternoon. Before four, each person gives their own spouse a clear yes or no. Only if both are yes do we meet in the corridor. If there is one no, a text goes to the front desk, and the desk tells the other room: don't wait tonight. That way no one has to be refused to their face."

Xu Siyi looked at her and laughed. "You work like someone who finishes reading a contract."

"My husband reads structural drawings. I read the fiber content on a label." Gu Wanning said, "You can still buy it after you've read. At least you know whether it shrinks."

After lunch the shrimp shells were piled at the edge of the plate. When the four of them walked out of the stall the sun was high. They did not walk on together. Lin Zheng and Gu Wanning went toward the Olympic Sailing Center. Chen Hao and Xu Siyi turned back into the hotel.

The room was quiet. Xu Siyi put the copy of the note on the table. She had photographed it in the restaurant, then felt that a photograph went against the spirit of what they had written, so she deleted it and kept only the paper. Chen Hao showered. When he came out she was still sitting where she had been.

"My answer is yes," she said. "Yours?"

"Yes."

"Don't say it to keep me company."

"I'm not." Chen Hao sat opposite her. His knee touched hers. "I want it when I'm hard. I want it when I'm soft too. Wanting it when I'm soft is the one that counts. I'm soft now. I still want it. I want to know what you are like in someone else's hands, and I want you to know what I am like in someone else's hands. Saying it is selfish. But if only you were allowed to go, and not me, I couldn't be that noble. If only I were allowed to go, I could do that even less."

Xu Siyi's eyes reddened. Nothing fell. "Then that's it. At four we open the door. If they don't, we go swimming and tear the paper up."

"Before we tear it?"

"Before we tear it, hold me for a while. We don't have sex. Sex would be like dosing ourselves with courage. I don't want to leave the room on courage."

Chen Hao pulled her onto his lap. Their breathing slowly matched. Outside, someone was calling the price of surfboards, one shout after another, far away. Xu Siyi put her face into the hollow of his neck. "If you're treated well over there, I'll be glad for you. If you're treated carelessly, you stop. You come back and tell me. Don't finish it for the sake of face."

"You too."

"I know."

At three fifty-eight Chen Hao stood by the door. Xu Siyi took his wrist and straightened his cuff, the way she would send him to an ordinary engagement. Her own lips were dry. She did not put lipstick on.

At four exactly, the door opposite opened.

Chapter 4 Ten Meters of Corridor

Chapter 4 Ten Meters of Corridor

The corridor was the same corridor. Deep blue carpet ate the footsteps. The sailboat painting hung a little crooked. No one straightened it. Ten meters is not long, but Chen Hao felt he had walked a whole season.

Gu Wanning stood in the doorway of 1210. The hem of her white shirt had been pulled out of her skirt. She wore the hotel slippers. When she saw Chen Hao she gave him her key card first, then took the other from his hand. The two cards changed hands in the air. Plastic touched once.

"Where is your wife?" she asked.

"In our room, waiting for your husband. She said I should come over first, so four people wouldn't jam the corridor like a negotiation that had broken down."

"Lin Zheng went to wash his face." Gu Wanning stepped aside. "Come in. The door locks from the inside. You can open it whenever you want."

The layout was almost the same as 1208. The smell was not. There was her perfume, a pale white-tea scent, and another drier smell, like cotton that had been in the sun. Lin Zheng's dark gray shirt was over a chair. Gu Wanning went to it, folded it, put it into the open suitcase, and closed the zipper.

"I'll put his things away first," she said. "Not to deny him. I don't want you to walk in and feel you're stealing."

Chen Hao stood by the luggage rack and did not know where to put his hands. Gu Wanning looked at him and laughed.

"You're more nervous than I imagined. Sit."

He sat at the foot of the bed. The mattress gave. Gu Wanning did not come over at once. She brought two bottles of water and a box of the hotel's condoms, set them on the nightstand, and drew the curtains halfway. The sea was still there. The light had gone soft.

"We talk first." She sat beside him, a fist's distance away. "Tell me. Do you want to stop now?"

"No."

"Do you want to kiss me?"

"Yes."

"Then kiss me. After the kiss we decide whether to take clothes off."

Chen Hao turned his head. The first kiss was too light, as if he were only confirming where her mouth was. Gu Wanning did not laugh at him. She put her hand on the back of his neck. The second kiss became a real kiss. When her tongue touched his, his back tightened. Her mouth was smaller than Xu Siyi's. The pace of the kiss was slower, slow enough that he could not answer it with habit. He had to stop, forehead against her forehead.

"My wife kisses fast," he said. "Just now I was kissing you the way I kiss her. That seems wrong."

"Whether it's right, you ask me." Gu Wanning's thumb crossed his lower lip. "This is all right. You stopped just now. I liked that. Go on."

They kissed for a long time. Chen Hao's hand moved from her waist to the hem of the shirt and stopped. "I want to undo the buttons."

"Undo them."

The buttons opened one by one. She was not wearing a bra. When her breasts were bare, Chen Hao's breathing visibly broke. Gu Wanning's breasts were not large. The shape was beautiful. The areolas were pale. The nipples were already standing. He looked at her eyes, got a nod, and only then bent to take one in his mouth. He circled the point with the tip of his tongue, then sucked gently with his lips. Gu Wanning's hand went into his hair. She was not pressing. She was resting it there.

"The other side too," she said.

He moved. Her waist softened, but her back stayed straight, as if she would not give over all her weight too early. Chen Hao pushed the shirt down to the bend of her elbows and stopped again. "All the way off?"

"All the way. Yours too. I want to see you."

Clothes hit the carpet with a light sound. Chen Hao's body was not lean. There was a ring of soft flesh at his waist from sitting in an office. He moved, without thinking, to cover it. Gu Wanning took his hand away.

"Don't cover it. I didn't come to inspect you." Her palm lay on his stomach and moved down, and stopped at the edge of his underwear. "May I touch here?"

"Yes."

She held him through the cloth. He was fully hard. A little wetness had come from the tip and darkened the cotton. Gu Wanning's grip was steady, neither light nor heavy. Her thumb circled the head. Chen Hao braced himself on the edge of the bed. A sound left his throat. He wanted to touch between her legs. His hand reached her knee and stopped.

"Yes." She opened her knees herself. "With your hand. Don't go in yet."

Her underwear was light gray, and a small patch of it was already wet. Chen Hao moved the cloth aside. The pad of his finger met her labia. Hot, slick, softer than he had expected. He found her clitoris and only pressed. He did not rub at once. Gu Wanning drew a breath.

"Lighter. Circles. Yes. Don't keep changing."

He did as she said. His middle finger took wetness at the entrance and went back to her clitoris. Gu Wanning's breathing gradually broke. The white shirt was still hanging from her arms. She shook it off herself. Chen Hao looked down at his finger going into her only to the first knuckle, then looked at her face. She was biting her lower lip. Her eyes were open. She was looking at him.

"Does your wife like being looked at?" she asked.

"Sometimes. Sometimes she wants the light off."

"I like it on." Gu Wanning said, "Look at me. A little deeper with your finger. You may."

When the second knuckle went in, her inner walls caught once. Chen Hao's thumb stayed on her clitoris. The speed did not change. Gu Wanning began to push her hips toward his hand. She did not cry out loudly. Her breath broke into pieces. Now and then a very short sound escaped her. Chen Hao's penis hurt with how hard it was. He still did not take his hand away to get his own underwear off. He remembered what was on the paper. Not being able was not a breach. Rushing was.

When Gu Wanning came she caught his wrist. Not to push him off. To hold him still, so he would not suddenly go faster. The insides of her thighs shook. Her vagina contracted in waves and drew his finger tighter. Afterward she laughed, and the laugh had a little breathlessness in it.

"All right," she said. "Your hand is more honest than your opening line. Up here. I want you in my mouth. No condom yet. We said oral was allowed. If you're close, tell me. Don't come in my mouth. That's something I'm adding now. If you don't accept it, we use hands."

"Not in your mouth," Chen Hao said. "I accept."

She had him sit back against the headboard and knelt on the carpet herself. The hotel carpet was not kind to knees. Chen Hao wanted to pull her up. Gu Wanning shook her head and put a pillow under her knees. "I chose the place. Don't rush to feel sorry for me. Pity too early feels like charity."

She pulled his underwear down. His penis came free, the tip wet and bright. Gu Wanning looked once, held the base, and licked one stroke with the flat of her tongue from underneath to the top. Chen Hao's thighs locked at once. When she took him in she took only the head. Her tongue turned around the slit. Her lips closed tight. Saliva soon made the shaft shine. She took him halfway, then drew off, and her hand made up the depth. She did not force a deep throat on herself.

"Look at me," she said, and took him in again.

Chen Hao looked. The picture hardly seemed real. Sometimes Gu Wanning's eyes closed. Her lashes moved. Then she opened them and looked at him. He put his hand on her hair and did not press. She made a sound, like permission. The pleasure stacked up fast and straight. Chen Hao felt his lower belly tighten.

"I'm close," he said, rough.

She pulled off at once. Her hand let go too. The stop was clean. Chen Hao even swayed, nearly complained, and then swallowed the complaint. Gu Wanning stood, kissed the corner of his mouth, and let him taste a little of himself.

"Good," she said. "You said it. We stop for ten seconds. Water."

They actually drank water. Ten seconds became more than ten. Chen Hao leaned against the headboard and watched her tear a condom open, check which way it faced, and roll it onto him. The smell of rubber made the thing more concrete at once. His heart was still fast. The fear had retreated a little from his body.

"I want to be inside," he said. "Do you want that?"

"Yes. You lie back. I'll do it. That way I can control how deep. If it hurts I'll stop. If you want to stop, say so."

Gu Wanning straddled his waist. Her hand held him. She rubbed the head slowly between her labia until her own breathing steadied, and only then sat down. The entry was very slow. Chen Hao watched his penis disappear into her an inch at a time. He watched her brow crease and then let go. When she sat all the way down, both of them let out a breath.

"Move?" he asked.

"Wait. Let me get used to your shape." Gu Wanning's palms were on his chest. "You fill more than you look like you will. Don't thrust. I move."

She began to rock. The range was not large. The grind was deep. Her clitoris met his stomach each time. Chen Hao's hands held her hips. His fingertips sank into soft flesh. He wanted to push up, remembered what she had said, and only held her. Gu Wanning looked down at him. Sweat rolled from her collarbone to her chest.

"You can thrust. Now you can. Slowly."

He thrust up. When their rhythms met, the sounds in the room became clear: skin against skin, the small noise of the mattress, the sound she kept in her nose. Chen Hao felt himself near the edge, and the tightness of the condom held him back a little. He freed one hand and rubbed her clitoris the way she had taught him. Gu Wanning's movement broke. She swore, "Right there," and sat down faster.

At her second orgasm she folded onto him. Her teeth knocked his shoulder. Her vagina clenched hard. Chen Hao held her, and ten or so seconds later he came too. When he came his vision went white. In his mouth there was only her name and a blurred good. Gu Wanning did not get up at once. She lay on his chest and listened to the two heartbeats slowly separate and become two people again.

"When you pull out, pinch the base of the condom," she said, muffled. "I don't want you getting it on the sheet. We still have to sleep in this bed tonight."

Chen Hao did it. He knotted it, wrapped it in paper, threw it away, and went to the bathroom for a hot towel. Gu Wanning lay spread on the bed, her legs still slightly open, watching him wipe her. After the orgasm her face had gone soft, too soft for the woman who had spoken the rules so clearly.

"Come here," she said.

He lay back. She pulled the quilt to their waists and put her face into the hollow of his shoulder and smelled him.

"You have your wife's perfume on you. Very light. I could smell it the whole time."

Chen Hao's chest tightened. "Does that hurt?"

"A little. I can take it." Gu Wanning's finger drew circles on his chest. "And you? Do you regret it?"

"I don't regret it. But I miss her. Is that a bad thought?"

"No." She said, "What's bad is pretending you don't. We agreed this isn't love. You miss her, which means you're still inside your marriage. When I came just now I thought of Lin Zheng's hands. I'm telling you because I don't want this to become a secret I keep from him. If you can't accept that, you can go back now."

Chen Hao was silent for a few seconds, then held her a little tighter. "I accept it. Thank you for telling me. I can tell you too. When I came, you were in my head, and so was what she said this morning, that we still go home together. The two sentences stacked, and that was when I came."

Gu Wanning laughed once. Her eyes were a little wet. "That's more honest than telling me I'm good-looking. We can sleep for a while, or not. If they finish early they'll knock twice, the way we agreed. Two knocks means all right. Three means your own spouse needs to come back at once. Do you have that?"

"I have it."

Outside, the light had gone dark. The sea was still sounding. Chen Hao looked at the ceiling. In his hand was another woman's hair. In his mind his wife's face was clearer than before. He did not take that as a contradiction. He only breathed carefully, afraid that if he moved he would lose this brief, permitted weight.

Chapter 5 The Other Bed

Chapter 5 The Other Bed

At the same time, the lock of 1208 made a sound.

Xu Siyi stood at the window. She did not turn and she knew it was Lin Zheng. He had knocked first, two knocks, very light. She had said come in. After he came in he locked the door, put the key card on the table, and did not walk toward the bed.

"Wanning has already gone into our room," he said. "If you want to stop now, I'll go out at once. No one will blame you."

Xu Siyi turned. She had changed into a dark slip dress. The underwear under it was something she had chosen herself. Her hands had shaken while she chose it. Lin Zheng looked at her. His gaze stayed on her face and did not drop first. That let her shoulders loosen a little.

"I don't want to stop," she said. "I'm nervous. Nervous isn't stop."

"Then we sit first." Lin Zheng pulled a chair out from the table and sat in the other one. "I've showered. I haven't been drinking. There are condoms in my pocket. The lights in your room are yours. I won't turn them off."

Xu Siyi switched off the main light and left one lamp by the bed. The light went warm. She sat opposite him, knees together, then felt that this was too much like an interview, so she deliberately turned her legs the other way.

"Your wife is very good at talking," she said. "While I was writing the rules I kept looking at her. I'm afraid I look like someone who's scared of trouble."

"You look like someone who takes responsibility," Lin Zheng said. "A responsible person walking into a room like this makes me easier than a person who is afraid of nothing."

His voice was lower than it had been at the table. Xu Siyi looked at his rolled cuffs, at the hand she had noticed since yesterday, and suddenly felt thirsty. She drank. A little water escaped the corner of her mouth. She wiped it with the back of her hand and felt clumsy. Lin Zheng did not laugh.

"May I come closer?" he asked.

"Yes."

He moved his chair beside her and still did not touch her. Their arms were separated by a little air. Xu Siyi moved first. She put her hand on the back of his and felt the callus, felt his temperature. Lin Zheng turned his hand over and let her fingers fall into his palm.

"Your hand is cold," he said.

"I'm afraid."

"Of what?"

"Afraid I only wanted to be looked at once, and don't actually want to do this with you. Afraid that halfway through I'll find I'm performing. Afraid my husband, over there right now, is more honest than I am." She finished and gave a bitter smile. "Also afraid you'll be too slow, so slow I'll think you don't want me."

Lin Zheng lifted her hand and touched his mouth to her knuckles. "I want you. I've been hard for a while. I just don't intend to use being hard to hurry you. I want to kiss you now. May I?"

"Yes."

When the kiss came down, Xu Siyi closed her eyes for a moment. Lin Zheng was not urgent. His lips were dry and hot. First they rested against hers. Then he took her lower lip. His tongue came in shallow, and went deeper only when she met it. Xu Siyi's hand caught the front of his shirt. She found she was shaking. It was not cold. One of Lin Zheng's hands stayed on her shoulder and did not go down.

They kissed until she herself pushed a strap off her shoulder. Only then did he ask, "Is this you wanting me to go on, or are you only warm?"

"Go on," she said. "Clothes can come off. You can touch my breasts. Below, wait until I say so."

He drew the dress down to her waist. Xu Siyi's bra was black. It made her skin look whiter. Lin Zheng's gaze stopped there, and the stop was obvious. Her ears heated. She did not hide.

"If you're looking, look," she said. "While you look, tell me what you're looking at."

"I'm looking at your collarbones. At how your chest moves when you breathe." Lin Zheng's finger slid along the strap to the edge of the cup. "I want to undo the clasp in front. May I?"

"Yes."

The clasp sprang. Her breasts came free, fuller than Gu Wanning's. The mole under the left one was clear in the warm light. Lin Zheng bent, kissed the mole first, then took the nipple in his mouth. He was very slow. The flat of his tongue pressed over it again and again. His palm held the weight of the other breast. Xu Siyi's waist jerked. She did not usually make much sound. Now a sound escaped her, and she found it strange in her own ear.

"Too light or too heavy?" he asked, against her.

"Heavier. A little teeth. Gently."

He did it. The small pain turned at once into a sharper pleasure, from her chest down into her belly. Xu Siyi closed her legs. Lin Zheng's hand went to her knee and stopped.

"I still can't go in here," he said. "But I want to touch you through the dress. Only the outside. All right?"

"All right."

His palm met the center of her. The dress and the underwear were both a little soaked through. Lin Zheng did not rub fast. He only pressed slowly with the heel of his hand and let her seek his hand herself. Xu Siyi sought it. Her hips moved in a small arc. Her breathing got shallower. This man had barely touched her clitoris in any real way, and she already felt she was going to come apart along his palm.

"I want your hand inside," she said. "Now."

Lin Zheng pushed the dress to her waist and drew her underwear down to the bend of her knees. He looked at her, got the nod, and only then parted her labia with his fingers. Wetness covered them. He found her clitoris and first slid the side of a fingertip over it, not pressing straight down the way Chen Hao sometimes did. Xu Siyi's thigh jumped.

"Like that," she said. "Don't change. How do you know?"

"I don't. I'm watching you." Lin Zheng's middle finger circled at the entrance and did not go in. "When you tighten here, I know light is right. One finger. May I?"

"Yes. Slow."

When one finger went in, Xu Siyi caught his wrist. Not because it hurt. Because the feeling was too full. Lin Zheng stayed inside and waited until her hand loosened, then moved slowly in and out. His thumb still attended to her clitoris. The rhythm was so steady it almost made her angry. She wanted him faster, and she was afraid that if it was fast there would be nothing left but the body.

"Talk," she demanded. "Don't only do it. I need to hear that you're still you."

"I'm Lin Zheng." His voice was against the side of her ear. "I'm in your room. Your husband is across the hall, with my wife. I know that. I still want you to feel good. You're gripping my finger hard. If you want a second one, tell me."

"I want it."

When two fingers went in she made a sound. Lin Zheng's other hand cradled the back of her head and let her rest against his shoulder. His fingers curved, found the slightly firmer place at the front, and stroked it lightly. Xu Siyi could not hold the sound down. She bit his shirt. The orgasm came long and deep. The insides of her thighs went numb around her own hand. Lin Zheng did not suddenly speed up while she was coming. He kept the same pace until she pushed his wrist.

He stopped at once. His fingers stayed inside until she said he could draw them out.

Xu Siyi panted. The corners of her eyes were wet. When Lin Zheng withdrew his hand he did it slowly, then wiped it with paper, then went and wrung out a hot towel. He half-knelt in front of her and wiped the insides of her thighs, as seriously as if the act had nothing to do with sex. Xu Siyi looked at the top of his head and cried a little, all at once. Not a large cry. Tears going down on their own.

Lin Zheng stopped. "Is this stop, or is it only crying?"

"Only crying." She sniffed. "Don't stop taking care of me. Don't go on either. Wait for me."

"All right."

He set the towel down, carried her to the bed, pulled the quilt over her waist, and lay himself outside the quilt, his arm under her head. Xu Siyi cried for two or three minutes. What she was crying about was not complicated. She had felt good, better than she had rehearsed, and so the guilt came after. The guilt was not because someone had forced her. No one had forced her. It was exactly because she had nodded at every step that she could not push the responsibility onto wine, or onto anyone else.

"I still want it," she said at last. "I don't want to stop the whole night. I want you inside. But you wear a condom, and you ask me again before you enter. I'm afraid what I'm saying now won't count in a minute."

"I'll ask again." Lin Zheng kissed her hair. "Do you want water? Do you want the bathroom?"

She went to the bathroom, washed her face, and looked at herself in the mirror. The lipstick was long gone. Her eyes were a little swollen. There was a faint red on her chest where he had been. She did not feel dirty. She only felt extremely clear, as clear as if she had just walked out of a meeting room at the bank, except what she was holding was not a file. It was her own body.

When she came back to the bed, Lin Zheng had opened a condom and set it by the pillow. He had not put it on. His shirt was off. His trousers were still on. Xu Siyi saw the hair on his lower belly and the obvious shape in his trousers, and swallowed.

"You're very hard," she said.

"Since you grabbed my collar. I can wait."

"Don't wait. I want to see you."

He took off the rest of his clothes. His penis was a little longer than Chen Hao's, not as thick, darker in color. The head was already wet. Xu Siyi looked, reached out, and stopped in midair.

"May I touch?"

When Lin Zheng heard that, his eyes went darker. "Yes. As long as you want."

She took hold of him. The heat went from her palm all the way to her ears. She moved her hand a few times. Her thumb crossed the head. Lin Zheng's stomach tightened. Breath left through his nose. Xu Siyi bent and licked once with the tip of her tongue. The taste was clean, a little salt. She took the head in, only for a short while, then drew back.

"I'm not very good at this," she said. "My husband doesn't ask for it much. I rarely want it myself. Tonight I want to try for a while. Don't push my head."

"I won't." Lin Zheng put his hands behind him and held the sheet. "When you stop, it's stop."

Xu Siyi took him in again. She held the part she could not take. Her tongue moved slowly along the ridge underneath. Lin Zheng's breathing got heavier. He still did not touch her head. The restraint made her want to do it more. She did it for a few minutes, until her cheeks ached, then lifted her head.

"I want you to put it on now," she said. "Come inside me. I'll lie down. You look at my eyes. If I cry, you stop first, the way you did just now."

"Asking you now." Lin Zheng tore the condom, put it on, and knelt between her legs. "Xu Siyi. I'm going to enter you. Do you want that?"

She looked at him, at this man who was still almost a stranger, at the sweat on his forehead. Her answer was quiet and clear.

"Yes."

He held himself and paused a second at the entrance, then pushed in. Xu Siyi's body was opened. A sore fullness went up her spine. She held his back. Her nails went in. Lin Zheng stopped halfway.

"Pain?"

"Full. Don't pull out. All the way, slowly."

When he was all the way in, both of them went stiff for a moment. Xu Siyi felt filled, filled enough to want to swear, and also to want her legs around him. She put them around him. Lin Zheng began to move. Each stroke withdrew a long way and came back slowly. The rhythm was not Chen Hao's. Chen Hao was hotter, more intent on being close. Lin Zheng was like a man listening to the structure of a building. Where there was a sound, he paused.

"Faster," she said. "I can take it now."

He went a little faster and still did not lose control. The sound of bodies meeting became clear in the room. Xu Siyi thought of the room opposite. Over there, maybe, the same sound. Her body clenched hard at the thought. Lin Zheng felt it. His movement did not turn rough.

"You're thinking of them," he said.

"Yes. Do you want to stop?"

"I don't, unless you do. You can think of them. You don't have to think only of me to make me glad."

The sentence nearly made her cry a second time. She did not cry. She opened her legs wider, heels against his waist, and let him go as deep as he could. Lin Zheng's fingers returned to her clitoris and rubbed lightly in time with his thrusts. Pleasure stacked on pleasure. Xu Siyi was pushed up again quickly. When she came she cried out, then blocked her mouth with the back of her hand. Lin Zheng took her hand away.

"The room is yours. You can make a sound. It doesn't matter if they hear across the hall. They know what we're doing."

So she did not block it. The sound was short and broken. Lin Zheng moved another dozen strokes inside the clench of her orgasm, then said, low, that he was going to come. Xu Siyi held his back and said to come. When he came his forehead was against hers. His eyes were open. His throat moved. He did not call any other name. Xu Siyi looked at him and was suddenly very grateful for the silence.

Afterward he did not collapse on her to rest. He pulled out, pinched the condom, knotted it, threw it away, and then gathered her into the quilt. Their heartbeats struck each other and took a long time to separate.

"Water." He passed her the bottle from the nightstand and watched her finish it. "Do you still want to stop? Or do we just lie here?"

"Lie here." Xu Siyi's voice was hoarse. "Don't go. Go when the time we agreed comes. I don't want to face this bed alone right now."

"I won't go."

Lin Zheng's hand moved down her back, stroke after stroke. Not sexual. Only bringing her back from the orgasm. Xu Siyi put her face against his chest and smelled a faint soap, and a little of the warmth that belonged to someone else's husband. She thought of Chen Hao. The way she thought of him was not a knife. It was a thread, drawn from this bed all the way to the bed opposite.

"I felt good," she said plainly. "Better than I expected. Don't take that sentence and use it as a score. I'm telling you because I promised myself I wouldn't lie. I still love my husband. Right now I miss him very much. I miss him, and for the moment I don't want to open the door."

Lin Zheng's arm tightened. "I know. I love Wanning. When I entered you I thought of her too. That doesn't stop me thanking you for trusting me. When you cried I was a little afraid. Afraid you didn't really want it, and only didn't want to be the one who backed out."

"I'm not." Xu Siyi lifted her head. Her eyes were still red. Her gaze was steady. "I wanted it. I may want it again. Not now. Now you just hold me. Not talking is fine too."

The sea wind bellied the curtains. The bedside lamp was still on. Two people lay in a bed that belonged to another couple, and neither mistook the other for their own spouse. That, strangely, eased Xu Siyi. She closed her eyes and heard her own breathing, and his. In the corridor there were not three knocks. For the moment, everything was still inside the paper they had written.

Chapter 6 Seven Thirty

Chapter 6 Seven Thirty

The agreed time was seven thirty in the morning. No one stayed in the other person's room until full daylight. Chen Hao woke at ten past seven. Gu Wanning had her back to him. Her shoulder blades were clear in the dimness. Her hair was spread on the pillow. He looked for a while and did not touch her. His body remembered the night. His penis was hard with the morning. He got up, dealt with it in the bathroom, washed his face, and only then, back at the bed, called her softly.

"Wanning. Ten past seven. I should go."

She turned. Her eyes were still a little swollen. When she saw it was him she pulled the quilt to her chest first. "All right. Before you put on the shirt I threw over the chair, look at it. That's Lin Zheng's. Yours is by the suitcase."

Chen Hao found his own clothes. There was a little of her perfume on the cloth, and more of the smell of last night's sweat after it had dried. He dressed, and poured a glass of water and set it by her hand.

"Are you all right?"

"All right." Gu Wanning sat up. Hair covered half her face. "The insides of my thighs will ache. That's normal. You didn't hurt me. When you go back, tell her you missed her too. Don't report only the good part."

"I know."

He paused at the door. Gu Wanning looked at him and did not offer a goodbye kiss. Chen Hao himself felt a goodbye kiss would be too much like a married couple. He only nodded and opened the door. The corridor was empty. The door opposite opened at the same moment.

Lin Zheng came out. The two men met eyes in the ten-meter corridor and both stopped. Both heads of hair were a mess. Neither collar was straight. Chen Hao spoke first, very low.

"She cried. Later she said it was only crying, not stop. She asked me to tell you she's all right. If you want to ask her yourself, her words are the ones that count."

Lin Zheng's jaw tightened, then let go. "And Wanning?"

"She said she's all right. She told me to take the truth back, including that I missed my wife."

"Then go back and say it." Lin Zheng turned sideways and left the way clear. "Don't finish the debrief in the corridor. These are their rooms, and ours."

When Chen Hao went in, Xu Siyi was sitting on the edge of the bed putting on a sock. She saw him. The sock in her hand stopped. Neither of them rushed at the other. Lin Zheng passed Chen Hao, went into his own room, and the door shut. In 1208 there were only the two of them.

Xu Siyi smelled what was on him. Her face went white for an instant, then recovered. Chen Hao smelled the soap Lin Zheng had left in this room. One corner of the sheet was badly creased. Jealousy came up from his stomach, sour and hot. He stood in the doorway and said the hardest sentence first.

"I slept with her. She came twice. I came too. We used a condom. I stopped once in the middle, because she told me to say so if I was close. While I was doing it I thought of you. When I came I thought of you too. She told me that when she came she had thought of Lin Zheng. I'm telling you now. And you?"

Xu Siyi threw the sock back on the bed and walked to him barefoot. She did not hit him. She did not smile. She lifted a hand and straightened his collar. Her fingers stayed on the collar a long time.

"I did it. I came too. Twice, or maybe once that was very long. I cried. He stopped and held me. He didn't go on until I said I wanted it again. He wore a condom. He didn't push my head. I felt better than I expected, so I felt guilty. Seeing you now, the guilt is still here, and so is wanting to touch you. You have her smell on you. I hate that smell. And I can't pretend I don't have his smell on me."

Chen Hao's eyes heated. He put his forehead to hers. Their noses touched. Neither of them was breathing steadily.

"I'm jealous," he said.

"So am I. We shower first, separately. After we shower we sit down and finish the twenty minutes. We don't make a second decision inside the jealousy."

Hot water reddened skin. Chen Hao stood under the spray and washed her perfume and Gu Wanning's perfume down together. Halfway through he felt ridiculous. Smell could be washed off. The shapes the body remembered could not. When he came out Xu Siyi was dressed. Her hair was still wet. She sat at the small table. The rules were still on it. With the hotel pen she had written a few lines on the back.

"I want to add one," she said. "No exchange in the daytime today. The four of us can go out together, or walk separately. No one kisses or puts hands on anyone outside. I need to see that you are still my husband, not only someone else's guest at night."

"I agree."

"And another. In the debrief we don't ask who was better. If you ask, I'll answer, and after I answer both of us will be hurt. I won't ask either."

Chen Hao nodded. "I almost wanted to ask. I'm not asking now. I'll only say what I feel. When I see this bed I think of him inside you. That picture makes me hard, and it makes me want to break something. The two things are together. I don't know what to do with them."

The tips of Xu Siyi's ears went red. "When I heard you say she came twice, my stomach was sour and my legs were soft. I have both too. We eat first. If our hands shake at the table, they shake. We don't compete at the table over who is more generous."

Breakfast was on the second floor. The sea view was a little farther than from the room. On the plates were eggs that had gone cool and porridge that was still hot. The four of them arrived almost together, and almost together hesitated in the doorway. In the end Gu Wanning sat first and pulled out the two chairs opposite.

"Sit," she said. "We're all still here. No one ran in the middle of the night. That counts as good news."

Lin Zheng poured soy milk for each of them. His movements were still steady. Only when he poured for Xu Siyi did he pause half a second longer. Xu Siyi saw it. She did not dodge, and she did not push the cup back. Chen Hao saw that half-second. His spoon made a pit in the porridge.

Gu Wanning broke the silence first. "Lin Zheng and I talked about the daytime rules. We agree there's no exchange today. The body needs rest. The mind needs it more. If anyone wants to meet alone this afternoon, it can only be in a public place, and they tell their own spouse. Whether we go on tonight, we say after dinner. No vote now."

"I wrote the same thing." Xu Siyi showed her the back of the paper.

Gu Wanning read it and gave it back. "Your handwriting really does look like a contract. I like it."

The liking was said lightly. It still made Xu Siyi's eyes hot. She lowered her head and drank the porridge. The steam reddened her eyes further. Under the table Chen Hao touched her knee with his. She touched back. That small exchange made him want to cry more than any deep stroke of the night before.

Halfway through the meal, tourists at the next table were talking loudly about tickets for the pier. Lin Zheng said, suddenly, "The wind is strong today. The beach will be cold. If we're going to Badaguan, morning is better. In the afternoon the light goes hard."

"Even a walk, you look at it like a site," Gu Wanning said.

"Occupational hazard." He looked at her. In the look was something Chen Hao recognized, because he had it when he looked at Xu Siyi. Not possession. It was: I still choose you. Chen Hao kept that look. He told himself that if they went on tonight, he would bring that look back, and not only someone else's warmth.

After the meal the four of them separated in the lobby. They agreed to meet at eleven at the hotel entrance and go to Badaguan. In the hour apart, Chen Hao and Xu Siyi went back to the room and did nothing. They lay on the bed, clothes in order, hands clasped. Xu Siyi put her face to his sleeve and smelled it.

"There's still a little," she said.

"The kind that doesn't wash off."

"Mm. Can you kiss me? Only the mouth. Don't go down."

Chen Hao kissed her. The kiss was slow. It did not have the strangeness of last night with Gu Wanning, and it did not have the perfunctory quality of certain nights in their marriage. Xu Siyi's lips were dry. She bit him lightly once, then let go.

"Still here," she said.

"What's still here?"

"We are. Just now I was afraid I'd kiss you and find it gone. It's still here."

Chen Hao held her tighter, chin against the top of her head. Outside, the sea flashed, like a piece of metal the wind had turned over. He did not promise forever. He only said, "At eleven I still go downstairs with you. If we go on tonight, it's a going-on we've talked about. If, in Badaguan, you suddenly don't want it, pull my sleeve. You don't have to explain in front of people."

Xu Siyi closed her eyes. "The sleeve. I'll remember."

Chapter 7 Badaguan

Chapter 7 Badaguan

The taxi ran along the sea. September light fell on the plane trees. The leaves were still green. The edges were already a little dry. The houses of Badaguan stood back behind the trees, one after another: yellow walls, red roofs, stone steps. There were not many tourists. Someone held a selfie stick. Someone pushed an old person along slowly. The four of them got out and walked abreast at first, then naturally became two pairs. Chen Hao and Xu Siyi went in front. Lin Zheng and Gu Wanning were a few steps behind.

At the corner of Zhengyang Pass there was a very small coffee shop. A handwritten list of the day's beans was stuck to the glass. Gu Wanning stopped to look. Xu Siyi stopped too. The two women stood together, shoulder to shoulder, and looked, oddly, like friends who had come out together. Chen Hao watched from behind. The jealousy in him eased in a strange way. Easing was not vanishing. He still remembered the weight of Gu Wanning sitting on him last night. But in daylight she would frown over where a bag of beans came from, and the frown made her a person again, not a picture from his night.

"Shall we go in and sit?" Xu Siyi asked.

"Yes," Gu Wanning said. "Ten minutes. If I sit too long I'll want to buy clothes, and if I buy them I won't be able to walk."

There were only four tables. They ordered two Americanos and two lattes. Lin Zheng did not drink sweet things. Xu Siyi stirred the foam on her latte apart with a spoon. Chen Hao watched her stir and said, suddenly, "You do this at home too. Something sweet, you have to spoil it a little before you'll drink it."

Xu Siyi looked up. "Saying that now, who are you trying to remind?"

"Myself," Chen Hao said. "I still remember you. I'm afraid that when this trip is over I'll only remember someone else's body, and not remember you stirring coffee."

The table was quiet for a second. Lin Zheng pushed the sugar packets aside and spoke slowly. "Then I'll say one too. When Wanning drinks an Americano she has to smell it first. She isn't putting it on. She smells it and then she knows whether she can drink it today. I used to think it wasted time. Later she was ill once and drank without smelling, and I found out that what I was actually afraid of was her not being particular about anything."

Gu Wanning looked at her husband. Her eyes softened, then she pulled the softness back. "In the daytime you aren't allowed to be this moving. Does being moving count as a foul?"

"No," Xu Siyi said. "It counts as the outdoor version of the debrief. As long as nobody undoes anyone else's buttons at the table."

They all laughed. After the laugh they walked on. The lawn in front of Huashi Villa was bleached by the sun. Wind came straight off the sea. Xu Siyi's scarf blew open a second time. Lin Zheng reached without thinking, stopped his hand in the air, and took it back. Chen Hao saw the stop. He went forward himself, wound his wife's scarf again, and let his fingertips rest a second at the side of her neck. Xu Siyi's ears heated. She did not dodge.

"Thanks," she said.

"Yours," Chen Hao said.

Gu Wanning watched from the side. She was not sour enough to need to speak. She only pinned her hair up. Her elbow touched Lin Zheng. Lin Zheng bent his head and asked if she was cold. She said she was not, and then said his hand had stopped well just now. Lin Zheng said stopping had not been easy. Their talk was very light. The wind nearly took the second half of it. Chen Hao still heard. He found he did not hate Lin Zheng. Hatred needed the other person to be grabbing. Lin Zheng was not grabbing. That left the jealousy without a target, so it had to go back into his own body and become a harder kind of swell.

At noon they ate seafood noodles near Minjiang Road. The broth was fresh. Chili oil floated on it. Halfway through, Xu Siyi's phone rang. A call from a bank client on a day off felt especially rude. She looked at the name, frowned, and went outside the shop to take it.

Chen Hao watched her profile through the glass. When she spoke her back was straight. One hand moved in the air. That was her habit when she was holding anger down. The call was not long. When she came back her face had already sunk.

"A client insists the guarantee clause has to be changed today." She sat and put the phone face-down on the table. "I said I was out of town. He said, don't you have a computer. I said we'd talk in office hours tomorrow. He laughed. That kind of laugh."

"The kind that treats you as someone on call," Gu Wanning said.

"Yes."

Lin Zheng pushed a little dish of vinegar to her hand and did not give a lecture. "The noodles are going cold. The clause will still be there tomorrow. You can swear at him once today. We'll listen."

Xu Siyi did swear, short and dirty. After she swore she startled herself, then laughed. Chen Hao had not heard her use that voice in a long time. It was not the bank's voice, and it was not a wife's voice. It was the voice of a person who had been annoyed. Under the table he took her hand. She held back, hard.

In the afternoon they did not go into more houses. Badaguan, walked too long, tired you. Pretty windows, seen too often, became windows. The four of them followed the road out to the rocks at Taiping Cape and found a clean place to sit. The sea was louder than it was in the hotel window. It hit the stone and broke into white.

Gu Wanning took her shoes off and set her feet on the cold rock. "I want to say something that can be said in daylight too. After last night I didn't want to run. I thought I would. I didn't. But today, when I saw Chen Hao put Xu Siyi's scarf on, I was still sour. After I was sour I told Lin Zheng. Now I'm telling you. The sourness isn't asking you not to do it. The sourness is that I'm still alive."

Xu Siyi looked at the sea. "I'm sour too. Sour that your perfume is still on his sleeve. I washed him once. It's still there. I'm not asking you to change perfume. I'm asking that none of us pretend to be so generous we don't have noses."

Chen Hao said, "I'm sour about the time Lin Zheng spends looking at you. The time he looks at you is steady. Sometimes I look at you once and go back to a message. The comparison is rotten. I'm still saying it. After I've said it I mean to change. Not to beat him. Because I should have been looking at you anyway."

Lin Zheng was silent a long time, long enough for a wave to come in and go out. He said, "I'm sour that Chen Hao can make Wanning laugh in that voice. That voice is scarce at home. I have no right to demand she laugh that way at home too. All I can do, when we go back, is make her carry fewer relatives who talk like clients. Relatives aren't clients. The tone is very similar."

Gu Wanning leaned on his shoulder, only for a few seconds, then sat up straight. "Enough. The daytime allowance is used up. If I lean any longer I'll kiss you. Kissing you isn't a foul, but kissing and kissing will get out of hand. We go back where there are people."

In the car back to the hotel, Xu Siyi's head was against the window. Suddenly she hooked Chen Hao's sleeve with her fingers. The force was not great. Chen Hao looked down at her. She shook her head, meaning this was not stop, only a hook. He covered her hand with his other one. In the back seat Lin Zheng and Gu Wanning said nothing. The radio was playing an old song. The words were blurred. Outside the window the sea was cut, stretch by stretch, by trees.

They reached the hotel at five. The lobby lights were on. The citrus smell was still there. The four of them stood at the elevator and no one pressed the button first.

Xu Siyi spoke first. "I want twenty more minutes in the room with my husband. If after that it's still yes, I'll come and knock on 1210 myself. Two knocks means we go on. No knock means tonight stops. Stopping one night is not canceling the whole thing."

"The same," Lin Zheng said.

The elevator opened. They went in and stood face to face. On the metal door their four shadows showed, blurred, very close. No one smiled. When the door opened, the carpet swallowed their steps again. Two doors shut in the same second, like last night run backward.

Chapter 8 Through the Wall

Chapter 8 Through the Wall

Twenty minutes was not enough to finish every feeling. It was enough to ask one question. Chen Hao sat on the edge of the bed and watched Xu Siyi wash her face. She washed the salt and the sunscreen off, pressed her face dry with a towel, came out, and asked him directly.

"Do we swap again tonight? If you're swapping for fairness, then forget it. I don't want a fair sacrifice."

"I'm not sacrificing," Chen Hao said. "In the daytime I thought about stopping. Out on the rocks I felt we could stop, because we already knew the body was real. But I don't yet know whether the second day will hurt more, or be clearer. I want to know. And you? When you hooked my sleeve I thought you were going to stop."

"I was afraid of wanting it too much," Xu Siyi said, sitting beside him. "Wanting it so much that hearing their voices would do something to me. That reaction made me look down on myself for a second. After I looked down on myself, I still wanted it. So my answer is we swap. The conditions haven't changed. If you hear me cry, don't come and bang the door down. Three knocks are my business. I'll use them."

"All right."

They exchanged key cards. This time they did not stand long in the corridor. Chen Hao knocked twice. Gu Wanning opened. She had already showered. Her hair was half dry. She wore a gray robe, belted at the waist. Seeing him, she did not immediately step aside into some suggestive angle. She only said, "Come in. I was sour about you in the daytime. You should know that. After I was sour, I still opened the door."

"I know." Chen Hao locked the door. "I was sour too. I still came."

The main light was off. The bedside lamp left the sea's shadow on the curtain. Gu Wanning set a bottle of water and two condoms where he could see them, then sat and patted the place beside her.

"Don't be in a hurry to undress me today," she said. "I want you to tell me what your wife said about you."

Chen Hao was blank for a moment. "She said I had your smell on me. She hated it. She also said she had Lin Zheng's smell on her. She wouldn't let me ask who was better. I promised."

"Then you don't compare in here either." Gu Wanning undid one of his buttons, only one. "You can think of her. When you want to think of me, look at me. If those stay two separate things, I'll sleep with you. If they get mixed into a contest, I stop."

"I'll look at you," Chen Hao said.

He looked at her. Inside the robe's collar was the collarbone he had taken in his mouth last night. Gu Wanning put her hand on his and led him to undo the rest of the buttons, then led him to the belt of the robe. The cloth fell open. She had nothing on underneath. Her body was quiet in the warm light. Her breasts rose and fell slightly with her breath. On her lower belly there was a very faint mark, like an old crease. Chen Hao's palm went there.

"Did you have a child?" he asked, and at once felt he should not have.

"No," Gu Wanning said. "I've been thin, and I've been heavier. The mark is mine, not a child's. You can touch. Your mouth too. Below waits for my nod."

He kissed her chest, kissed the faint mark, then took a nipple in his mouth. Tonight he did not use the speed he used with Xu Siyi. He remembered she wanted slow. The tip of his tongue circled. His lips sucked. His palm held the other breast. Gu Wanning's breathing slowly grew heavy. Her hand went into his hair and suddenly tightened.

"If there's sound next door, don't stop unless I say stop," she said. "The wall is thin. Today I'm not going to pretend there is no next door."

Chen Hao made a sound of agreement and took her deeper into his mouth. Gu Wanning's waist lifted and fell. His hand went down her stomach and stopped at the edge of her pubic hair. She opened her legs.

"Your hand. First the way you did last night."

His fingers parted her. She was already wet. The wetness reached his knuckles. Her clitoris was slightly firm under the pad of his finger. He circled, steady. Gu Wanning bit her own knuckle. Sound still leaked from her nose. Chen Hao put one finger in, curved it, and moved slowly. Her leg came up over his back. Just then, from the room opposite, there was a low sound of the bed, and then Xu Siyi's short cry, the kind she could not hold down. The sound came through the wall as if through a layer of cloth.

Chen Hao's finger stopped.

Gu Wanning opened her eyes. Her chest rose and fell. "Do you want to stop?"

"I don't know." His voice was badly hoarse. "That's her. I'm harder, and I want to go over there. Both things at once."

"Then stop for ten seconds." Gu Wanning sat up. She was not angry. She took the water, drank, and passed it to him. "In the ten seconds you decide. If you stay, we go on, and while we go on you don't punish my body, and you don't hurt me in order to cover what's over there. If you leave, that also keeps the agreement. You can go right now."

Chen Hao drank. The water was cold. Ten seconds passed. Opposite, there was a moment of quiet, then a heavier sound of impact. His hand was shaking. He put the shaking hand into Gu Wanning's palm.

"I stay. If you think the state I'm in won't do, you stop us."

"All right." She pressed his hand back between her legs. "Look at me. Don't look at the wall."

He looked at her. His finger went in again. His thumb returned to her clitoris. Gu Wanning did not hide from the sound. Her eyes were on Chen Hao. Her body contracted to the rhythm from next door. She said it herself. "I hear it. I'm wetter. That's rotten of me. I still want you to go on. If you can accept it, accept it."

"I accept it."

He bent and took her clitoris in his mouth. He had not done this last night. Gu Wanning drew a short breath and grabbed the sheet. Chen Hao's tongue was light and slow. His fingers still curved inside her. Her taste was salt and heat, different from his wife's. He did not allow himself to turn the difference into better or worse. He only remembered it. Gu Wanning's thighs closed over his ears and blocked part of the sound from next door. She came quickly. The flesh inside bit his fingers. Her waist left the mattress and fell back hard. Chen Hao did not stop until she pushed his forehead.

She was panting. She pulled him up and kissed him. The kiss had her own taste in it. Chen Hao's penis pressed her stomach, hard enough to hurt. Gu Wanning reached and held him, stroked a few times, and asked, "Do you want my mouth, or do you want to come in?"

"Come in. I want to look at you. You put the condom on. My hands aren't steady."

She tore the packet, rolled it onto him, and checked the edge. Then she lay back, put a pillow under her waist, and opened her legs. The position kept nothing back. Before Chen Hao knelt in he still asked. She said yes. When he entered, both of them made a sound. Next door made a sound at the same moment. The sounds stacked. A numbness went up Chen Hao's spine.

"Slow," Gu Wanning said, her hand on his waist. "Yes. Like that. You don't have to be faster than over there."

He was slow. Each stroke went as deep as it could, then drew back until only the head was in. Gu Wanning's legs locked around his waist. Her heels pressed him. Her hands held his face and forced him, inside those sounds, to keep looking at her. Chen Hao saw her eyes were wet. Not crying. Pleasure. His thumb went back to her clitoris. She swore, very short. Her inner walls tightened.

"I'm going to come," she said. "Keep going. Don't suddenly get rough."

When she came she buried her face in his neck. Her teeth held his skin and did not break it. The clench nearly undid Chen Hao. He moved another dozen strokes and said, low, that he was going to come too. Gu Wanning said he could. He came into the condom, forehead against her shoulder, vision white. After he came he did not collapse on her for long. He remembered to pinch the condom when he pulled out. He did it, threw it away, cleaned both of them with a hot towel, and then gathered her into the quilt.

Next door went quiet. The quiet was louder than the sound.

Gu Wanning touched the tooth mark on his shoulder. "I bit you. She'll see it tomorrow. Do you want me to tell it, or will you?"

"I will," Chen Hao said. "Are you hurting? Was I too hard just now?"

"No. You listened." Her finger went down his spine and stopped in the small of his back. "When you stayed, I actually let out a breath. Not to win. I don't want a person who isn't here and is forcing it anyway. Your mind left for ten seconds, then came back. Those ten seconds were good."

Chen Hao put his face into her hair and said, muffled, "I want to go look at her right now. I'm not going. I'll keep to seven thirty. If you miss Lin Zheng, you can say so."

"I do," Gu Wanning said, cleanly. "I wonder if his hands are still steady. I wonder if he stopped when she cried. I believe he would stop. Believing isn't the same as not wondering. Hold me. We'll listen to the sea for a while. The sea is more honest than the wall."

They listened to the sea. As they listened, Gu Wanning's breathing sank, then she woke a little and asked if he was thirsty. Chen Hao passed her the water and watched her drink. There was no sex in the way she drank. In those few minutes without sex he felt more clearly that he was doing something that would affect a marriage. Not because he had come. Because he was willing, when another woman asked if he was thirsty, to answer seriously, and to bring that seriousness back to his wife.

After nine there was very soft talking next door again. The words could not be made out. Gu Wanning looked at Chen Hao. Chen Hao shook his head, meaning he was still all right, he did not need to stop. So she did not ask again. She only put her leg between his. Skin against skin, hot. They did not do it a second time. Not doing it was also a choice. Chen Hao was hard for a while. He drew back a little himself, so his body would not renegotiate for him. Gu Wanning saw it and said thank you, quietly. The two words were light in the dark, light as a key card put back where it belonged.

Chapter 9 Her Voice

Chapter 9 Her Voice

In 1208, Lin Zheng heard his own heartbeat first.

When Xu Siyi opened the door she was still in the clothes from the day. Her scarf was over her arm. She gave him the key card and said that in the twenty minutes they had not quarreled. Lin Zheng nodded, locked the door, and went to wash his hands first. Washing was not a performance of being fastidious. He needed those tens of seconds to change himself from the husband of the daytime into a man who would still keep the rules tonight.

Xu Siyi sat on the bed and watched him come out. "At Huashi Villa today you reached and then took your hand back. I saw it. I was relieved at the time. Afterward I was a little disappointed. I told Chen Hao about the disappointment. Now I'm telling you. Disappointment isn't an invitation to touch me outside. It's the truth."

"I'll take it," Lin Zheng said, sitting beside her. "Tonight I can not touch you first. Talking counts as part of the night too. If you want to, we go step by step, the way we did yesterday."

Xu Siyi looked at him, then suddenly pulled her top off over her head. The movement was fast, fast enough to be a little like a dare. The bra was still on. Her chest rose and fell.

"I want to," she said. "I don't want to use talking to hide. Kiss me. Below waits for my nod. And the wall is thin. I may make a sound. Don't praise me for that, and don't stop me for it."

Lin Zheng kissed her. The kiss was deeper than last night, because he already knew how she liked her lower lip taken. Xu Siyi's hand went inside his shirt. Her palm lay on his waist. He undid her bra, held her breasts, and passed his thumb over a nipple. She made a sound. Lin Zheng bent to take it in his mouth. His teeth were light, the pressure she had asked for yesterday. Xu Siyi's back arched.

"You remember," she said.

"I remember."

His hand pressed the center of her through her trousers. The cloth was soon soaked through. Xu Siyi undid the trousers herself, took that obstacle off, and sat naked on his lap. When Lin Zheng's finger entered her she was already wet and hot again. He put in only one. His thumb pressed the side of her clitoris. He was not in a hurry to add another.

"The second," she said, moving her waist, wanting deeper.

He added the second. Her forehead was against his. Her breath was on his mouth. At that moment Gu Wanning's voice came from opposite, very short, but recognizable. Xu Siyi's body went rigid.

Lin Zheng stopped moving at once. "Stop, or wait?"

Xu Siyi's eyes were shut. Her vagina still held his fingers, contracting, out of her control. Tears turned in her eyes and did not fall.

"Wait," she said. "Don't move. Let me hear this one through. I need to know what I feel."

They waited. The sound opposite passed. Then there was lower talking, impossible to make out. Xu Siyi's tears fell, onto the back of Lin Zheng's hand. She opened her eyes.

"I'm sour, and I want it," she said. "Go on. If you think I'm using you to punish him, you stop. I can't tell myself. So I'm giving you the judgment of whether to do this with me like this."

Lin Zheng looked at her for a long time. His fingers were still inside. Then he said, "I judge that you're still speaking, and still leaving both of us a way out. This isn't punishment. This is hurt. A person who is hurt can still want. I'll go on. If you curse him, you can. If you curse Wanning, I stop."

"I won't curse her." Xu Siyi's voice shook. "She didn't steal. We all signed that paper. Go on."

Lin Zheng's fingers moved again. With his other hand he wiped her tears. What he could not wipe, he let fall. Xu Siyi's pleasure was driven high and sharp by the jealousy. She held his shoulders. Her nails went into the flesh. The orgasm came fast and hard. Her whole body shook into a small knot. Lin Zheng held her, waited until the contractions passed, and only then slowly drew his fingers out.

Xu Siyi panted and swore, not at anyone, only at the wall. After she swore she started on Lin Zheng's trousers. Her hands were urgent. Lin Zheng held her wrists.

"Slower. Like this I'll think you want it over quickly."

"I don't want it over." Sweat covered her forehead. "I want you inside, to cover that sound. The reason is selfish. I still want it. Will you give it?"

"Yes. With a condom. And I want you lying properly, not sitting on my lap in a temper." Lin Zheng's voice was not loud, and it did not give way. "A posture out of temper makes it easy for you to hurt. If you hurt, you'll blame tonight. I won't accept that."

What he said reddened Xu Siyi's face. In the red there was anger, and also the feeling of being caught. She lay back and opened her legs. Lin Zheng took his clothes off, put the condom on, knelt between her legs, and still stopped.

"Xu Siyi. I'm going to enter. Do you want it now? Not ten seconds ago."

"Now."

He entered. She was tighter than last night, and inside the tightness she was very wet. There was no real obstruction. Both of them groaned at once. Opposite, there was the sound of bodies at the same moment. Xu Siyi's eyes opened wide. Lin Zheng did not go faster. He stayed at the deepest point. His palm was on her face.

"Look at me," he said. "The sound is there if it's there. Your body is here with me. Do you want fast or slow?"

"Slow. Deeper. Don't take your hand off my face."

He did it. Each stroke seemed to push the wall's sound a little farther, and could not push it clean. Xu Siyi simply stopped competing with the sound. She lifted her legs and let him reach the place that made her go weak. Her fingers went into his hair. Lin Zheng's breath was at the side of her ear. He asked if here was right. She said yes. He asked if he could touch her clitoris. She said she wanted it. After his thumb was there, her voice finally got louder than next door. She heard herself. Shame burned from the soles of her feet to her face. Her body met him honestly anyway.

"I'm going to come," she said. "Don't stop. Don't look at the wall."

"Only you."

When she came she cried out. It was not a name. It was a broken ah. Inside, she bit him in waves. Lin Zheng set his teeth, gave her a few more strokes, and said he was close too. Xu Siyi held him and said to come inside, the condom was still on, that was enough. When he came his shoulders shook. He did not fall in a way that pressed her breath out. Afterward he pulled out at once, dealt with the condom, and took her to the bathroom.

The bathroom light was very white. Xu Siyi looked at the two of them in the mirror and suddenly did not want to stay in white light. Lin Zheng set the water to a warm temperature, let her lean on his chest, and rinsed the insides of her thighs with his hand. Hot water took the tracks of tears off. Xu Siyi's voice went very small inside the sound of the water.

"Just now I used you to cover him. You didn't let me use my body until it broke. Thank you."

"You don't have to thank me like that," Lin Zheng said. "I get sour too. I heard Wanning's voice. When it made me harder, I disliked myself for a second. Then I looked at you. Looking at you, I was still inside the rules."

Xu Siyi turned. Her forehead rested on his collarbone. "Tomorrow I want to see you in the daytime. Only walking. No touching. I need to take you out of this wall and put you back in the day. Otherwise I'll think you're only a sound."

"All right. We'll tell them."

They dried themselves and went back to the bed. Xu Siyi put on his shirt, then felt she should not, and changed back into her own T-shirt. Lin Zheng saw the small change and did not point it out. He only poured her water, watched her finish it, and put the cup back where it had been.

At eleven at night the other side had been quiet for a long time. Xu Siyi did not ask for a second time. Her body ached. Her heart ached. Lin Zheng lay outside the quilt. His palm was on her back, stroking. He stroked until her breathing lengthened.

"Sleep," he said. "I'll keep the time. If you wake in the night and say stop, I'll go back to my own room at once."

"Don't leave in the middle of the night," Xu Siyi said, eyes closed. "If you leave in the middle of the night I'll think I did something wrong. Wait until seven thirty. That's what we wrote."

"Until seven thirty."

The sea was still sounding outside the window. From the other side of the wall no more sound came. Half asleep, Xu Siyi caught one of Lin Zheng's fingers. She held it tight, the way you hold a key that should not be yours, and she also knew clearly that at daylight she would give it back. Lin Zheng did not pull his hand away. He looked at the ceiling and, in his mind, restored Wanning's face once through. The restoration worked. From that he knew he was not lost. A lost person calls the wrong name. Tonight he had not called the wrong one once.

Chapter 10 Confession on a Rainy Day

Chapter 10 Confession on a Rainy Day

On the third morning it rained in Qingdao. It was not a storm. It came off the sea in layers and hit the glass, and turned Golden Beach into a sheet of darkened metal. At seven thirty the two couples were each back in their own rooms. This debrief was longer than yesterday's.

Chen Hao showed Xu Siyi the tooth mark on his shoulder. Xu Siyi looked a long time. She pressed it with the pad of her finger and did not use a nail. She said, "She bit you. Does it hurt?"

"No. I need to tell you that when there was sound next door I stopped for ten seconds. I almost came back. I stayed. Staying wasn't because she matters more than you. It was because if I had run back then, I would have felt I was treating both of you as switches."

Xu Siyi heard that through, and said her own through. She said she had used Lin Zheng to cover the sound on the other side of the wall. Lin Zheng had refused the posture that came from temper. She had cried, and she had come. While she said these things her eyes were on the rain outside the window, and her hand kept holding Chen Hao's. She held until both their knuckles were white, then let go.

"This morning I don't want to be touched," she said. "Not as punishment. My skin is already too full. You can sit beside me. Coming in isn't allowed. If you want to deal with yourself, go to the bathroom. I won't listen and I won't mind."

"I'm not going to deal with myself," Chen Hao said. "I'll sit with you. If at noon they suggest the four of us talk, will you go?"

"I'll go. Some things are better said by four people than guessed under a quilt."

Gu Wanning brought it up at noon in the lobby bar. The rain made Badaguan impossible. Almost no one else was at the hotel bar. She ordered a pot of hot tea and four cups, and put the already creased rules in the center of the table.

"I want the ugly part said into the second day," she said. "Last night the wall was thin. Everyone heard. If anyone pretends they didn't, this pot of tea is wasted."

No one pretended. Chen Hao admitted first that he had stopped for ten seconds. Xu Siyi admitted she had wanted to cover the sound. Lin Zheng admitted he had disliked his own reaction, and had not for that reason hurt Xu Siyi. Gu Wanning admitted she had been more aroused inside the sound, and that she had required Chen Hao to look at her, not at the wall.

After it was said, there was a strange ease on the table. The ease was not that the problem was gone. It was that the problem finally had a shape, and was no longer going moldy in anyone's stomach.

Xu Siyi poured tea for each of them. "I want a new agreement. In the time we have left, if we hear it again, we can stop or we can go on, but we say so at the time. We don't do it while swallowing it. Swallowing it turns it into a contest. I don't want to contest my husband, and I don't want to contest you."

"Agreed," the other three said, almost together.

Lin Zheng added one. "This afternoon the body can rest. If anyone wants to meet, all four meet. We don't split into pairs. If we go on at night, that's the last full night, plus the morning before checkout. Not doing it in the morning is also fine. We don't stuff the last of the time full. Stuffing it full would be like a clearance sale."

Gu Wanning looked at the rain outside. "I have another sentence that isn't pretty. I've started to like Chen Hao as a person, not only his body. The liking isn't enough to take him away. But a liking that isn't enough to take someone away can still bite. I told Lin Zheng. Now I'm telling you. If this sentence makes anyone want to stop, we stop now."

Steam off the tea hid their faces a little. Chen Hao's chest sank. He did not pretend this was manners. He looked at Gu Wanning, then at Xu Siyi.

"I have it too," he said. "I like the way she talks. Direct. When she stops, she doesn't pause. At home I sometimes go around things too much. This liking isn't love. The paper says we don't say love. I'll keep that. But I have to put it on the table. Otherwise when I go back I'll pretend it was only that we did it twice."

Xu Siyi's fingers tightened on the cup. She was silent a long time, long enough for the tea to cool a little. Then she said, "Thank you for not saving this kind of sentence for WeChat. I'm jealous. I can also listen. Because I like Lin Zheng too. I like the way he asks me. I like that when I cried he actually stopped. If this liking gets called love, I'll be afraid. So I won't call it that. I'll only say that after we go back to Shanghai, I want my husband to learn to ask me this way too. Not to learn his technique. To learn that he treats me as a person who can change her mind."

Lin Zheng's ears went red. He looked at his wife. Gu Wanning's eyes were red too, and she was smiling.

"All right," she said. "Then we leave the liking on the table. No one puts it in a suitcase. If we do it on the last night, we do it carrying this liking, and when it's done we set it down. Setting it down isn't forgetting. It's not taking it away to trade for the homes we already have."

Rain fell the whole afternoon. The four of them did not go back to the rooms to swap. They swam in the hotel's indoor pool. Lanes of water were between them. Xu Siyi's stroke was standard, left over from the bank's staff-club days. Gu Wanning swam slowly and stopped a long time at the wall. Chen Hao and Lin Zheng each took a lane. Neither raced. After they swam they soaked in the shallow end, water to the chest. To talk they had to raise their voices a little.

"Checkout is tomorrow," Chen Hao said.

"The day after tomorrow is still long," Gu Wanning answered.

Xu Siyi pushed her wet hair back. "Tonight I want to. Not because there's only tonight left and I have to grab it. My skin was empty all afternoon. Empty enough. I want Lin Zheng. I want my husband to know I want him. I want, after it's done, to go back and sleep beside my husband. Can we change the sleeping part tonight? Last night, we do it until a certain time, then each of us goes back to our own bed. No one wakes in someone else's arms. Seven thirty is too much like staying over."

Gu Wanning thought. "I agree. Back in our own rooms before twelve. We go back even if no one knocks three times. When the clock gets there, clothes on. That way of closing is clean."

Lin Zheng looked at Xu Siyi. "You're sure you want tonight? This morning you said your skin was too full."

"Morning was morning," she said. "Now is now. I've changed my mind. The rules allow a change, as long as no one talked you into it. No one talked me into it."

In the water Chen Hao held her hand, held it once, and let go, because in public they had agreed not to touch that way. He only said, "I know. Tonight I go across. At twelve I come back. If you come back early, leave the light on for me."

"I will," Xu Siyi said.

Rain struck the glass roof of the pool, sound after sound, like knuckles on a very long corridor. The four of them soaked until their fingers wrinkled, then got out. The towels were large and wrapped their bodies. In the mirror they looked like four ordinary guests, hair dripping, eyes brighter than on the day they checked in, and more afraid than on the day they checked in.

Chapter 11 The Last Night

Chapter 11 The Last Night

At nine at night the rain had lessened. The wind was still there. When Chen Hao knocked at 1210, Gu Wanning had already cleared a space in the suitcase. She said the last night should not be done in the middle of someone else's clothes. Chen Hao took the sentence in. He also took off his watch and set it on the table, face down.

"At twelve I leave," he said.

"At twelve you leave," Gu Wanning repeated. "Now come here."

She was not in the robe. She wore an ordinary black tank top and shorts, like a person about to read in the room. That made Chen Hao want her more. He went over. His hand stopped at the side of her waist, waited for her nod, and only then drew her in. The kiss came slowly. Both of them knew these were among the last kisses of the trip, so neither of them made a kiss into a taking.

Clothes came off piece by piece. The tank top was lifted. The shorts went to her ankles. His shirt was pushed to his elbows by her, then taken off by him. When they were naked facing each other, Gu Wanning drew a circle with her finger around the tooth mark on his shoulder.

"Tomorrow it will be clearer," she said. "Your wife will see it again. Let her see it. Don't put ointment on it to hide it, unless it hurts. Hiding it would be like refusing the bill."

"I won't hide it."

They fell into the bed. Chen Hao's mouth went from her collarbone to her stomach, then lower. Gu Wanning opened her legs. Her fingers went into his hair and did not press down. He took her clitoris in his mouth. His tongue was slow almost to the point of torment. Her breaths went deeper, one after another. When two fingers entered she was already soaking. Chen Hao looked up at her. She nodded, meaning this was it.

There was no sound next door. The quiet made everything sharper. Gu Wanning was soon licked until the insides of her thighs shook. She said she wanted him inside, then said wait, kiss me first. Chen Hao kissed her. While he kissed, his penis slid along the seam of her legs and did not go in. The condom was still on the nightstand, unopened.

"I want you to wear it," Gu Wanning said. "The last night isn't an exception. If you go soft-hearted now and try to beg me, I'll look down on you for a second. After I've looked down on you I'll still push you off."

"I won't beg." Chen Hao took the condom and put it on himself. "I'm coming in. Do you want it?"

"Yes. On our sides. I want you to hold me from behind and come in. The last time I want to be held, not watched while I perform."

She turned onto her side. Chen Hao fitted himself to her back. One hand came around and held her breast. His penis stopped at the entrance, and he asked once more. Gu Wanning bent her leg and said yes, now. He pushed in. At this angle he went deep. Both of them made a muffled sound. His forehead was against the back of her head. His hand went from her breast to her clitoris. The thrusts were slow. Rain covered the sound of skin.

"Talk," she required.

"I'm here," Chen Hao said. "I'm Chen Hao. Tomorrow I go back to Shanghai with my wife. Right now I'm inside you. You're very hot. I like you. As we agreed, this isn't love. But the liking is real. If you want me to stop, I stop."

Gu Wanning's voice scattered. "Don't stop. A little deeper. Don't take your hand away."

He did it. Pleasure stacked little by little, without last night's panic of being chased by the wall. When Gu Wanning came she buried her face in the pillow. Her back arched. Her vagina clenched him hard. Chen Hao stayed at the deepest point, waited until she eased, then went on. She reached back and caught his hip and told him to finish moving too. He gave her several dozen more strokes. The speed was still governed by her hand. When he came he held her very tight, tight enough that both their ribs were uncomfortable. He called her name. The moment he had called it he added that tomorrow he would tell his wife about this sound too. Gu Wanning laughed, laughed until her shoulders shook. Inside she contracted once more, and he was sensitive enough that he nearly hardened again.

They did not do it a second time. It was still early. The body felt it had already reached the place where it ought to stop. Chen Hao pulled out, dealt with the condom, and wiped her legs with a hot towel. While he wiped her, Gu Wanning looked at the ceiling.

"You're too good at the afterward," she said. "Good enough that I'm a little angry. The anger isn't asking you to do it badly. It's that I know when I go back I'll use this to ask something of Lin Zheng. Asking your spouse is a good thing. Using someone else as the ruler is what we agreed to avoid. So I'm telling you now. I will not say Chen Hao wipes better. I will only say I want to be wiped like this too. When you tell Xu Siyi, don't use Lin Zheng as a ruler either."

"I'll try," Chen Hao said. "I can't do perfect. When I can't, I'll admit it."

They put clothes on and leaned side by side against the headboard, watching the rain outside for a while. At eleven forty Chen Hao stood up. Gu Wanning did not ask him to stay. She gave him his key card back and took her own. Their fingers touched once at the edge of the cards.

"Thirty days," she said.

"Thirty days."

The corridor light was on a sensor. It came on as soon as he stepped out. The door opposite opened at the same moment. Xu Siyi and Lin Zheng came out one after the other. Both heads of hair were a little disordered. Their clothes were neat. The four of them met in the middle of the corridor. No one spoke. Xu Siyi reached first and took Chen Hao's hand. Her palm was very hot. Lin Zheng stood beside Gu Wanning and looked down at her. Gu Wanning shook her head slightly, meaning she was all right.

Two minutes to twelve. The two doors shut again. This time, behind the doors, were their own spouses.

After Xu Siyi came in she did not ask at once. She pressed Chen Hao to the door first and put her face into his chest and smelled him. When she had smelled him she said, "There's her. There's also your own sweat. I can accept it. If you want to ask whether he's on me, he is. You can smell now. After you smell, we shower, and then we only sleep. I don't want to do it again inside the last of the smells. Doing it would be like a contest."

Chen Hao bent his head. At the side of her neck he smelled Lin Zheng's soap, very faint, faint enough to be almost covered by her own scent. Jealousy still pricked him. He did not dodge. He kissed that skin and said, "I smell it. I'm still here. Let's shower."

Under the hot water they scrubbed each other's backs. When she reached the tooth mark on his shoulder, Xu Siyi's hand stopped. Chen Hao said again what he had said in the daytime. She listened, then set her chin on his shoulder.

"She told you not to hide it. She was right. I have a little red on my chest too. You can look tomorrow. Not looking is also fine. I won't trade it with you for sympathy."

The bed was their own bed, though they had only stayed three nights. The sheets had been changed. The hotel had cleaned the room while they were swimming. The clean smell let both of them breathe out, and it also left a little emptiness. Xu Siyi turned the light off, put her back to him, then fitted her back into his arms. The position was too much like the way Chen Hao had just held Gu Wanning. He went stiff, and said it honestly.

"I held her like this just now. If I hold you this way I'll remember. I'm telling you. If you don't want to sleep like this, we change."

Xu Siyi was silent for a few seconds, then pulled his arm tighter. "Don't change. If you remember, you remember. If you secretly change position, I'll think that one belonged to her. Something that belongs only to her is worse than remembering. Sleep. Tomorrow we still have to check out, and take the train, and decide what we are after we get back to Shanghai."

Chen Hao kissed the back of her head. "We'll say it tomorrow. Tonight I'll only say one sentence. I came back."

"I know." Xu Siyi's voice was already sticky with sleep. "I came back too. Don't let go."

The rain stopped in the latter half of the night. The sound of the sea became clear again. Four people slept in two beds, a corridor between them, and also a paper written full of rules. The paper was still in Xu Siyi's bag. No one had torn it. It had already done what it was there to do.

Chapter 12 Checkout

Chapter 12 Checkout

The morning light was the kind that comes after rain, white and without mercy. Xu Siyi woke first. Chen Hao's arm was still across her waist. His palm was hot. His fingers were loose. She did not move it away at once. She looked at a strip of sea in the gap of the curtain. The sea was flat, as if nothing had happened. Her body knew it had. There was a heaviness at the tops of her thighs. The red on her chest was still there. Someone else's tooth mark was on her husband. She set these things side by side and did not pick one of them, first, to be the conclusion.

When Chen Hao woke he saw her looking at him. He did not smile, and he did not hide. "Morning."

"Morning. Seven forty. We said the morning didn't have to be sex. I don't want it now either. I want to eat, and then give the cards back."

"All right."

They showered, dressed, and pulled the chargers out of the sockets. Xu Siyi folded the rules and put them in a slot of her wallet, not as a souvenir, because she had not yet decided when to destroy them. Chen Hao saw it and did not object. He did up his buttons in front of the mirror. Xu Siyi stood behind him and turned his collar right. The tooth mark showed a little above the collar. She pressed it with her fingertip.

"Still there," she said.

"Yours on your chest is still there too. I saw it. I'm not comparing sizes."

"Thank you for remembering that one."

When the knock came, both of them startled. It was two knocks, not three. Xu Siyi opened the door. Gu Wanning stood outside, wearing very light makeup. Her suitcase was upright beside her. Lin Zheng was a little behind her, holding two cups of coffee, like a man who did not know whether coffee ought to be carried into someone else's marriage.

"The restaurant downstairs is crowded," Gu Wanning said. "We bought coffee. We can drink it in your room and go down together, or we can pretend we never knocked. You choose."

Xu Siyi stepped aside. "Come in. The door's open. On checkout day we don't lock it from the inside."

The four of them stood in a room that was already half packed, and suddenly none of them knew where to put their hands and feet. Lin Zheng set the coffee on the table. There were four cups. He even remembered whether Xu Siyi drank sweet things. Hers was an Americano. Xu Siyi saw the writing on the sleeve, and the bit of liking in her moved again. She did not hide the liking, and she did not stretch it.

"You remembered," she said.

"Remembering doesn't cost anything," Lin Zheng said. "What costs is whether, after we go back, I still remember that Wanning doesn't drink sweet things. I already remembered that. I just didn't say it when I remembered."

Gu Wanning took her own cup and blew on it. "Then say it when you go back. Saying it to her is enough. You don't have to say it to all of Hangzhou."

The coffee was half gone before the talk really began. Chen Hao said first that after he came back at twelve he had smelled the scent, had been jealous for a moment, and had not had sex. Xu Siyi said she had put the rules in her wallet. Gu Wanning said that in the morning she had thought of sending Chen Hao a message on the hotel line, to tell him that if the tooth mark seeped blood he could use hot water, and then she had thought better of it and knocked herself, because an internal line would also become the start of contact. Lin Zheng said he had stood in the bathroom a long time, not out of regret, but to ask Xu Siyi's crying out of his ears and into a place where it would not disturb him when he went home.

When Xu Siyi had heard all of it she set her cup down. "We say the thirty days to death one more time. Once we leave this door today, we don't exchange WeChat, we don't leave phone numbers, we don't search each other's companies on any app. If we find them, we still don't add them. During the thirty days, thinking is allowed. What you think, you tell your own spouse. You don't tell the other person. After thirty days, if both couples still want to send word that they're all right, Xu Siyi and Gu Wanning make the contact. The husbands don't move first. If one of the women is unwilling, it ends. Is that fair?"

"Not fair to me," Chen Hao said. "But I agree. I know my hands are fast. A person with fast hands ought to be tied a little."

Lin Zheng nodded. "I agree too. My hands aren't fast, but I think slowly, and when I think slowly I write very long messages at night. Once they're written they're easy to send. If Wanning keeps that right, I'm at ease."

Gu Wanning looked at Xu Siyi. "After thirty days I'll wait for you one hour in a fixed place. Only one hour. If you don't come, I'll take the answer as no. We fix the place now, so later we don't use discussing the place as an excuse to chat. I won't go to Shanghai from Hangzhou. You don't have to come to Hangzhou from Shanghai. Qingdao isn't suitable. Coming all the way would be too much like doing it again. Jiaxing. Jiaxing is in the middle, so neither of us looks more hurried. The old teahouse by South Lake. I'll write it on paper. Three o'clock on the Saturday afternoon thirty days from now. If you come, we drink a cup of tea, say we're all right, and each go our way. If you don't come, I finish the tea myself."

Xu Siyi copied the address into her wallet. After she copied it she felt her handwriting was too steady, too steady for a person whose heart was beating. "I'll decide with Chen Hao whether to come. I won't run to Jiaxing alone and play the hero. If he doesn't want it, I don't come. The same for you. If Lin Zheng doesn't want it, you don't show up. Absence doesn't need an explanation."

"All right," Gu Wanning said.

The checkout line was not long. The woman at the desk was not the one who had taken the wrong envelopes that day. She smiled and asked for the key cards, asked about the minibar, asked whether they wanted to delay until afternoon. The four of them handed the cards over. The plastic cards stacked together, were swept into a drawer, and the room numbers left the system. Chen Hao watched the drawer shut and suddenly understood that this was more like an ending than exchanging cards in the corridor. The ending had no music. The ending was only a drawer.

Wind at the hotel entrance blew Xu Siyi's hair into her face. Taxis stood in a line. Lin Zheng's car came first, because they had to catch an earlier train at Qingdao North and change once on the way back to Hangzhou. When the suitcases went into the trunk, Gu Wanning walked up to Xu Siyi.

"I'll hug you once. Only once. No kiss."

"All right."

The two women held each other for a short second and a little more. Shoulder met shoulder. Perfume mixed. Neither buried her face in the other's neck. When they let go Xu Siyi's eyes were dry, but the corner of her mouth was shaking. Gu Wanning nodded once at Chen Hao and did not hug him. She said, "Don't pick at the tooth mark. If you pick it, it stays longer." Then she got into the car.

Lin Zheng shook Chen Hao's hand. Both hands used force, and after the force both of them felt the gesture was too much like the end of a project. Lin Zheng let go and said to Xu Siyi, "You didn't do anything wrong when you cried. After you go back, if he still doesn't know how to stop, you stop yourself. Stop where you can see it."

Xu Siyi said, "Your wife wants directness. Give it to her. Don't only give it in Qingdao."

Lin Zheng smiled, a short smile. The door shut. The car joined the traffic along the coast and soon was only an ordinary pair of taillights. Chen Hao and Xu Siyi were still on the steps. The next guests dragged suitcases past them. Someone complained that the sea wind was strong. Someone said they absolutely had to eat barbecue at night. The world went on receiving new key cards.

"We go too," Xu Siyi said.

"We go."

Their car passed Golden Beach. The sea flashed on the right. Yesterday's rain had washed the sand very flat. Chen Hao looked out the window and reached into the middle of the seat. Xu Siyi put her hand in. Both their palms were sweating.

"Do you regret it?" she asked.

"I regretted a few moments. The whole of it, no. And you?"

"The same. What I'm most afraid of now isn't that you like her. It's that after we get home, in order to prove we weren't affected, we'll deliberately live colder than before. Cold turns into another kind of lying."

Chen Hao held her hand tighter. "Then at home we argue, we say it, we do it. I don't agree to going cold and pretending nothing's wrong. If someday you want to go to Jiaxing, you tell me. Whether I want you to go or I don't, I tell you. I won't treat silence as permission."

The taxi went up onto the elevated road. In the rearview mirror Tingchao Hotel became a pale sign, then disappeared. Xu Siyi did not look back. She watched the road ahead and kept her wallet pressed to her knee. Inside it there was an address, and the rules, and her own identity card. The address on the card was still Shanghai. She rubbed that address with her thumb, the way you rub a promise that has not yet expired.

Chapter 13 Qingdao North

Chapter 13 Qingdao North

The hall at Qingdao North Station was high. The announcements rounded the place names. Their train was a little after one in the afternoon. Hongqiao in Shanghai was a bit over four hours away. In the security line someone carried a box of seafood. Someone chased a child back and forth. When Xu Siyi handed over her identity card her hand was steady. Chen Hao's bag was asked open. Inside were chargers, two dirty shirts, and a box of condoms that had not been used up. The officer glanced, expressionless, and closed it. Chen Hao's ears heated anyway. Past security, Xu Siyi said quietly, "Three left. We can use them at home. We don't use them up and call it a task."

"Not a task."

While they waited they bought two cups of very hot tea and a box of pastries. The pastries were mung bean, ordinarily sweet. Xu Siyi took one bite and pushed the box at Chen Hao. She still had to spoil a sweet thing before she ate it, but a pastry could not be stirred open. She bit it in small bites, as if finishing something she was not required to like.

"You're thinking of him," Chen Hao said.

"I am. Thinking of the way he handed over coffee. Thinking of you too. Which part do you want?"

"Both."

"When he handed the coffee I liked him for three seconds." Xu Siyi looked at the platform doors. "In those three seconds you weren't there. Then the three seconds ended, and I immediately wondered whether you had seen that I liked him. You saw it. You didn't punish me with it. Now I'm giving you the same chance. If you want to talk about her, you can. When you've said it, we get on the train."

Chen Hao opened the tea lid and closed it again. "I think of the way she said twelve o'clock and meant twelve o'clock. She didn't ask me to stay. I was relieved, and after the relief there was a hollow. The hollow wasn't wanting to remain. The hollow was that someone ended a thing seriously. I don't meet that often. In sales I've seen too many endings that pretend there will still be contact. She didn't pretend. I like that. After I liked it I wanted even more to sit this train with you. Because you don't pretend either. Even not liking the mung-bean cake, you show it clearly."

What he said made Xu Siyi want to laugh. She laughed once, and her eyes reddened. "That flattery is clumsy. I'll take it."

Their seats were on the window side, the two of them together. After the train left, Qingdao's sea was quickly replaced by ordinary fields, buildings and trees. There was water in the fields. Daylight pressed on the water. Chen Hao had prepared a whole journey of talk. Once he was actually sitting, half an hour passed and he had not spoken. Xu Siyi did not push him. She put her forehead to the glass and watched the poles go backward, one by one.

Past Weifang she spoke. "I'm going to tell you the details of last night. If you don't want to hear, say stop. The rule I made about stop works in bed. It works in talking too."

"Tell me. If I stop, I'll say stop."

Xu Siyi kept her voice very low, too low to be heard in the aisle. "When he entered me he asked whether I still wanted it now. He didn't ask once before and then treat that as my agreeing all the way to the end. When I cried his fingers stayed inside and waited for me to decide. I told him to go on. When I came there was sound next door. I hated that wall. I was also wetter because of that wall. That's the sentence I least want to tell you. But if I don't tell you, some night after we get back I'll think it by myself, and after I've thought it I'll feel I betrayed you a second time."

Chen Hao's hand closed into a fist on his knee, then opened. He looked at her profile, at the ear that had gone red with shame. He was a little hard. He hated being hard now, and he would not lie to her about it again.

"Hearing it made me hard," he said. "And it hurts. The hurt is in my stomach. The hardness is in a very specific place. If you see it, don't think appetite is all I have left. I have both."

"I see it." Xu Siyi's gaze stopped on his crotch for a second and moved away. "I'm not pure either. While I was telling it I responded too. I'm not going to deal with it on the train. I'm only letting you know that after it's told, we're still sitting together. That matters more than being unmoved."

So Chen Hao told his part too. He told her about entering Gu Wanning from behind while they lay on their sides, about her requiring a condom even on the last night, about calling her name when he came and then adding that he would tell his wife about that sound. When Xu Siyi heard the name, her nails went into her palm. She did not say stop. She waited until he finished, then showed him the crescents she had pressed.

"This hurts," she said. "It isn't your fault. It's my body keeping the account. When the account is kept, it lets go. Look. I let go."

She had. The four crescents in her palm went quickly from white to red. Chen Hao took her hand to his mouth and kissed the marks. The kiss was light. Someone in the aisle walked past with hot water. No one looked twice.

The attendant pushed the food cart through. They bought two boxed meals. The taste was ordinary. The steam was real. While they ate they did not talk about bodies for a while. They talked about work. Xu Siyi said she would call the client's guarantee clause back tomorrow. She would not hand herself over on a day off. Chen Hao said this quarter's target was still short a stretch. Short was short. He did not intend to make it up by drinking with clients. The talk was deadly ordinary. Ordinary let Xu Siyi's shoulders come down, a little at a time.

"You see," she said, chewing. "Besides those three nights, we still have clauses and targets. If a marriage is kept up only by not swapping, it's too thin. It also depends on who refuses a rude phone call, and who is willing to say the anxiety about a target out loud, instead of taking it home and turning it into temper."

"Then after we're home we keep one evening a week when we don't talk about work," Chen Hao said. "And we don't talk about them. We only talk about how we want to be touched. The agreement may be embarrassing. Embarrassment can count as paying a debt. The debt is one I owe you. I used to finish and go shower, and leave you alone on the bed. You said that the first night. I didn't take it as law then. I do now."

Xu Siyi looked at the greens in the boxed meal and nodded. "The law passes. With an attached clause. When I want it, I say I want it. When I don't, I say I don't. We don't use having sex to prove I'm not thinking of him. Sex as proof is canceled."

"Canceled."

After Jinan the light darkened. Their two faces showed on the window glass, laid over the lights outside. Xu Siyi lowered her seat a little and put her head on Chen Hao's shoulder. She could not sleep. She only leaned. Chen Hao could smell a little of the hotel's citrus shampoo still in her hair. Under the shampoo was her own scent. He suddenly wanted to cry. The want came without warning. He made no sound, but tears fell into her hair. Xu Siyi felt it and lifted her head.

"What are you crying about?"

"That we're still on this train," he said. "And that I almost felt the only person who knew how to end a thing seriously was her. That isn't true. You're ending it too. Your ending is harder, because you still have to go on living with me. Going on takes more spine than ending."

Xu Siyi wiped his tear with her thumb. "Then grow the spine. I'm not asking you not to think anymore. I'm asking that when you think, you come back, instead of standing outside the platform."

"I'll come back."

Near Suzhou the lights grew dense. Shanghai had not arrived, but the air already felt like the air of the delta, wet, bright, without salt. Xu Siyi went to the toilet. When she came back her eyes had been washed. She sat, took the rules out of her wallet, unfolded them, and folded them again.

"About Jiaxing, my answer right now is that I won't go," she said. "Not that I'll never go. On that Saturday thirty days from now, I probably still won't want to put us back at a tea table. I want to finish, at home, what needs saying. If you want me to go, you say so. You wanting me to go doesn't mean I will. I'll listen, then I'll decide."

Chen Hao thought a long time. The train announcement was already previewing Hongqiao. "I don't want you to go. In that not-wanting there is jealousy, and there is protection. I'll separate them. The jealousy is that I don't want you to see him again. The protection is that I'm afraid if you go, you'll break the spine that's growing at home. I admit both reasons. The final right not to go is yours. My opinion is not to go."

"Then I'll note your opinion," Xu Siyi said. "If I change my mind in the thirty days, I'll tell you a week ahead. I won't disappear for an afternoon without warning."

Hongqiao arrived. The crowd pressed them out of the doors. The wind in the underground passage was hard. Chen Hao pulled the suitcase. Xu Siyi carried the laptop bag. Their hands came apart once in the crowd and found each other again quickly. When they found each other, neither spoke. Speaking had been the train's work. The passage was only responsible for returning people to the ground.

Chapter 14 The Lamp at Home

Chapter 14 The Lamp at Home

The apartment in Xuhui was on a road that was not wide. Downstairs there was a fruit shop and a nail salon that was always being renovated. When they came in, the sky was fully dark. The light in the entry was on a sensor. The moment it came on, the smell of home met them. Laundry detergent. The scent Xu Siyi usually burned. Fruit in the refrigerator that might have been there too long. No sea. No citrus. No other couple.

They stood in the entry. Neither took their shoes off first.

"Like coming back from a business trip," Chen Hao said.

"It is coming back from a business trip," Xu Siyi said, dropping the keys into the dish. "The content of the trip can't be written on an expense form."

At last they took their shoes off, washed their hands, and threw the dirty clothes into the basket. Chen Hao opened the refrigerator. There were two bottles of water and half a cabbage. Xu Siyi glanced and said they would order noodles tonight. Before the noodles arrived they sat on the sofa with a cushion between them. After a while Xu Siyi took the cushion away and sat closer. Not pressed against him. Allowing leg to touch leg.

"I'm going to shower," she said. "Alone. After I shower we eat. After we eat we decide whether to touch. Don't come in while I'm showering. At home there isn't a corridor to escape down, so the door has to be shut even more."

"I'll shut it for you."

When the water started, Chen Hao sat on the sofa and answered two work messages, then felt he had answered too fast, as if he were escaping. He turned the phone over. The tooth mark itched under his collar. He did not pick at it. He looked at the lamp on the ceiling, the one they had bought together. There was a fine crack in the shade, from a knock when they moved. The crack was still there. If the marriage was this lamp, it was still this lamp. It only had one more crack that had to be acknowledged.

When the noodles came, Xu Siyi had already dried her hair. She wore an old T-shirt and shorts. Her legs were long. There was no makeup on her face. Chen Hao looked at her and felt more unsettled than he had in the hotel. In the hotel she had been held up by rules. At home she was only his wife, thirty-one, a little blue under the eyes, slurping when she ate noodles.

"What are you looking at?" she asked.

"You, at home."

"The me at home is harder to handle. I know." She broke the braised egg and gave him half. "After we eat I have something to say. Not the rules kind. Wanting."

They finished the noodles and put the boxes in the trash bag. Xu Siyi washed her hands, came back to the sofa, and sat straight onto his lap. The place was the same as the night before they left. Chen Hao's hands held her waist and did not go down.

"I haven't said how far the wanting goes," she said.

"I'll wait."

"I want kissing. I want your hands inside my clothes. Before you go below, ask again. I don't want the light off. If it's off I'll think we're hiding. And I may drift in the middle. If I drift I'll say so. Don't get harder in order to pull me back. Force isn't a rope."

"Kissing is all right. The light stays on. If you drift, you say so. I won't use too much force."

The kiss began slowly. The sofa at home was more familiar than the hotel bed, familiar enough that Chen Hao nearly used the old speed to take her tongue. He slowed. Xu Siyi noticed. Between kisses she said, "Is this slowness yours, or did you learn it?"

"Some of it was learned. Some of it I'm keeping. If you hate it, I'll change."

"I don't hate it. As long as the person you're looking at is me."

He looked at her. His hand went under the hem of the T-shirt, palm on her waist, then up, and stopped at the side of her breast. Xu Siyi was not wearing a bra. When her breast fell into his hand, both of them sighed. His thumb crossed the nipple. She trembled lightly. Chen Hao bent and took it once through the cloth, then felt the cloth was in the way, so he pushed the T-shirt up under her collarbones. The light made the red very clear, on the outer side of her left breast, left by Lin Zheng's mouth. Chen Hao saw it. His tongue stopped beside that red.

"I want to kiss here," he said. "Not to stamp over it. To know it's there, and still kiss you. May I?"

Xu Siyi's eyes were wet. "Yes."

He kissed the red, very lightly, and only then took the nipple in his mouth. Xu Siyi's hand went into his hair. Her breathing broke. Chen Hao's other hand pressed her stomach and did not go down. She twisted. The cloth of her shorts rubbed the place where he was already hard.

"Hand in," she said. "Touch the outside first."

His hand went into the shorts and pressed her through her underwear. The cloth was wet. Chen Hao's throat went dry. He pressed slowly with the heel of his hand, as if asking. Xu Siyi put her forehead to his and said, "Move it aside. Fingers can go in. Get a condom and put it where I can see it. Whether you enter waits for me to say it separately."

Chen Hao took a condom from the drawer of the coffee table and set it where she could see it. Then he moved the underwear aside. The pad of his finger met her labia. She was hot, slick, matching the memory of the three nights he had been away, and slightly different. The difference might only have been more wetness. He did not ask about the difference. He found her clitoris and circled lightly. Xu Siyi's waist went soft at once.

"One finger," she said.

One finger slid in. The walls closed around it. Chen Hao stayed inside, waited for her to adjust, then moved. His thumb took care of the outside. Xu Siyi's eyes were open, looking at him, and looking at the living-room lamp. She said, suddenly, "I drifted. I thought of his fingers stopping like this too. I thought it. I'm back here with you now. Go on. Don't speed up."

Chen Hao's heart was pricked. His hand stayed steady. "I heard you. I'll go on. The speed doesn't change."

He did not speed up. Xu Siyi's shame and pleasure wound together and soon pushed her to the edge. She bit his ear and said like this, don't change. When the orgasm came she clenched his hand, buried her face in his neck, and the sound was muffled and not entirely hidden. Chen Hao did not draw out until she relaxed. He went and washed his hands. When he came back she was still on the sofa, legs open, eyes red, her expression clear.

"I want you inside," she said. "Wear the condom. On the sofa. Light on. Ask me before you enter. If I say wait, you wait."

Chen Hao put the condom on. The smell of rubber was especially plain in their own home. He knelt on the rug, took her shorts and underwear off together, and kissed the inside of her knee. Then he stopped.

"Xu Siyi. I'm going to enter. Now."

"Now."

When he entered, both of them looked at each other. She was a little tighter than in the hotel. It might have been the angle of the sofa. It might have been that the string in her had not fully loosened. Chen Hao stopped halfway and asked if it hurt. She said it was full, he could go all the way. He did. Their foreheads touched. He began to move, slow, deep, each stroke withdrawing very clearly. Xu Siyi's legs locked around his waist. The lamp threw their shadows on the opposite wall. The shadows swayed lightly with the movement.

"Look at me," she said.

"I am."

His thumb returned to her clitoris. Xu Siyi's voice gradually came out. It was no longer the hotel voice, afraid of being heard next door. This was her home. She could make a sound. When she did, Chen Hao felt his eyes heat. He did not turn the heat into harder impact. He kept the speed she wanted. The second orgasm was slower than the first, and longer. Inside she clenched in waves, clenched until he could not hold. He said he was going to come. Xu Siyi held his face and said come, come looking at me. He came looking at her. In his sight there was no sea and no other bed. There were her eyes, and the lamp with the crack.

After he came he did not get up at once and go to the bathroom. He pulled out, pinched the condom, knotted it, threw it away, and got a hot towel. The towel was from home, old, soft. He wiped her stomach and the insides of her thighs, slowly. Xu Siyi watched him do it, and at last the tears fell. This time it was not a guilty cry. She could not have said what it was either. Chen Hao picked her up, put her on the bed, and lay down too. The towel was still in his hand. A while later he remembered to drop it.

"I'm here," he said.

"I know." She put her face to his chest. "The marriage is still here. It isn't the one from before the three nights. It knows now that we look at other people, that we get wet, that we get jealous, that we make sounds in someone else's arms, and that we also come back at twelve. It's still only the two of us. A third person doesn't get into this bed. Doesn't get under this lamp. Do you agree with that definition?"

Chen Hao's arm tightened. "I agree. It's still a marriage. Ours. It isn't open. Those three nights are a story with the seal on it, not a new system. The system has only this new clause: if you want it you say so, if you don't you say so, if you drift you say so, if you're jealous you say so. After you've said it, you stay here."

Xu Siyi nodded. Her hair brushed his skin. "I still lean toward not going to Jiaxing. I've noted your opinion. If we fight about this in the thirty days, we fight. We don't throw that paper. The paper can be torn. It can't be thrown at someone for them to see."

"I won't throw it."

They turned off the living-room light and left a small one by the bed. When Xu Siyi was nearly asleep she said, "Tomorrow you'll see the tooth mark. Tomorrow I'll see the red on my chest. We look once and go to work. Work isn't escape. Work is the other half of living. The other half has to be there too, or this bed is only a hole."

"See you at work," Chen Hao said, and after he said it he felt the sentence was too clumsy, clumsy in just the right way.

Xu Siyi let out a breath in his arms that was almost a laugh. A car passed outside. Its lights swept the curtain and went. The smell of home closed around them again. The sea was still sounding, very far away, sounding in memory, no longer responsible for numbering their doors.

Chapter 15 Within Thirty Days

Chapter 15 Within Thirty Days

On the first workday back, both of them got up ten minutes late. The toothbrushes stood side by side in the bathroom. Neither yielded. While Xu Siyi put on makeup, Chen Hao heated milk in the kitchen. Heating milk was a small thing he had not done before. She drank a mouthful and looked at him.

"Is this compensation?"

"It's wanting to," he said. "If you think it's sweet, I'll change it tomorrow."

"It isn't sweet. It's fine."

On the subway they did not stand together. Xu Siyi got off one stop earlier. Before they separated, at the gate, Chen Hao said only one sentence: see you tonight. The three words were so ordinary it was as if the three nights of travel had not happened. Xu Siyi put them in her ear anyway, and kept them there all day.

The bank's meeting room was cold. The client had indeed sent the revisions to the guarantee clause. The tone was still the tone of someone calling a person who was expected to be available. Xu Siyi revised the clauses one by one and wrote the reply email hard. After she sent it she went to the restroom and looked at herself in the mirror. The makeup was still on. The red on her chest was covered by the shirt collar. She suddenly did not want to cover it so tightly. Not for anyone else to see. Because she herself knew someone else's mouth had been there, and her husband's kiss had been there afterward. Both things were true. She let the collar down a little, then felt there was no need, and put it back. Putting it back was not denial. It was denying that she needed an audience.

Chen Hao was in a meeting at his company and drifted halfway through. What he drifted to was Gu Wanning saying that not being able was not a breach. That sentence had saved him at the time. After the meeting he messaged Xu Siyi: Thinking of you at noon. Not thinking of Qingdao. Thinking of you stirring coffee. Xu Siyi answered forty minutes later: The meeting was long. The person who stirs coffee is still here. Learn less of other people's sentences. Say more of your own. Chen Hao looked at that, smiled, and sent back an all right.

The first night both of them were tired and did not have sex. Xu Siyi said she did not want it. Chen Hao said he had heard. They leaned against the headboard and each read, their feet touching under the quilt. The second night Chen Hao wanted it, and said so. Xu Siyi said today they could use hands, not enter. He accepted. Her hand was not skilled. He did not perform an exaggeration. When he came in her hand he said her name. She went and washed, came back, threw the towel at him, and said next time he could get the towel himself, she was not his after-sales service. Then she kissed him once, to show this was not sending him away.

On the fifth night they quarreled. The cause was small. Chen Hao finished his shower and did not spread the bath mat. Xu Siyi stepped in water and swore. After she swore she knew the sentence had been too heavy. Chen Hao answered with one of his own: over there, why didn't you swear about bath mats. The moment the sentence was out, both of them went quiet.

Xu Siyi spoke first. "You put the bath mat and him in the same comparison. That's what we agreed not to do. I'm hurting now. I want to stop this sentence, not the marriage. You take that sentence back, and then we talk about the mat."

Chen Hao's face reddened down to his neck. "I take it back. That sentence was dirty. I felt I wasn't as careful as he was, so I grabbed a thorn. The thorn isn't the fact. The fact is I forgot the mat. It has nothing to do with him. I'm sorry."

Xu Siyi sat on the toilet lid and looked at her wet sock. "I accept the taking back. What I swore just now was too much too. I wasn't actually angry at the water. I was angry that on the fifth day back, some of the good habits are still here, and some of the old laziness is still here. I'm afraid I'll take the laziness to mean you only take care with other people. I'm saying that fear now. You don't have to block my fear with perfection. Just spread the mat."

Chen Hao spread the mat, then took a dry towel and wiped where she had stepped. When he finished he was still kneeling there, and he looked a little foolish. Xu Siyi looked at him. Half the anger went. The half that remained was not anger. It was sourness. She told him to get up. They sat on the bed.

"I thought of him today too," she said. "What I thought was whether he was also quarreling in Hangzhou over some small thing. After I thought it I didn't search his company. I'm telling you. I held the search key down."

"I thought too," Chen Hao said. "I thought about whether her tooth mark had faded. It has faded. I didn't take a picture. After I thought it I heated milk for you. The milk isn't an exchange. The milk is that I'm still here."

They did not have sex because of the fight. Not doing it was also a way of keeping the promise. Xu Siyi said that if she still wanted it tomorrow, she would say so. Chen Hao said that if he was still sour tomorrow, he would say so, and he would not again use the words over there to hurt her. They slept holding hands. In the middle of the night Chen Hao woke once and saw her face quiet on the pillow. He did not wake her. He only pulled back the quilt she had kicked off and covered her shoulder.

On the tenth day it rained in Shanghai. The rain did not smell like Qingdao's. There was no salt. Xu Siyi got off work late. When she came in, Chen Hao had already heated the food. At the table she suddenly took the paper out of her wallet. The paper had gone soft. The creases were white.

"I want to tear it," she said. "Not as denial. Its work is done. I copied the address onto a new piece of paper and locked it in the drawer. The rules themselves don't need to be carried every day. Carrying them makes it feel as if we're still on the trip."

"We tear it together," Chen Hao said.

They tore the paper into very small pieces, threw them in the trash, then felt that leaving them in the household garbage was not clean, so they went downstairs and threw them in the compound's recycling bin. Rain threads hit their faces. After Xu Siyi threw it, her hand was empty. The emptiness panicked her for a second. Chen Hao held the empty hand.

"The rules are torn. The words are still here," he said. "If you forget which one, I'll remind you. If I forget, you scold me. Scold the specific thing. Don't scold Qingdao."

"Done."

At half a month they had sex once, and it was long. It was on the bed at home, with the light on. Xu Siyi asked him to use his mouth first. Chen Hao did, slowly, and in the middle asked whether she wanted him to change. She said don't change. After she came she cried a little, and she said of her own accord that she had not drifted. Chen Hao believed her, because she was not obliged to report good news. When he entered her, both of them were sweating. Afterward he did not go shower. He held her, a towel under them, and listened to her tell a small thing from work. The small thing was a colleague calling her proposal "organizing materials" again. She had answered. After she answered she was still angry. Chen Hao listened and said the man was stupid. Xu Siyi said he did not have to say the man was stupid. He only had to say he was on her side. Chen Hao said he was on her side. That sentence brought her closer to him than any technique.

On the twentieth day, at a sales dinner, people tried to pour drink into Chen Hao. He refused. The refusal was not elegant. He still drank two glasses. When he got home he did not hide it. Xu Siyi smelled him and told him to brush his teeth. After he brushed he sat on the sofa and said, suddenly, "At the table someone joked that a business trip must have a story. I laughed. After I laughed I wanted to throw up. Not because of the alcohol. Because our story can't be touched by that kind of joke. I'm telling you now. If you want to scold me, scold me."

Xu Siyi sat beside him and did not scold. "The laugh was a shield. I understand shields. Next time you can not laugh, and say there isn't one. There isn't one isn't a lie. Those three nights are not a story they get to consume. They're ours. Sealed."

"Next time I'll say there isn't one."

That night he wanted sex. Xu Siyi did not. He said he had heard. They only leaned together. While they leaned, Chen Hao was hard, and he said so. Xu Siyi said he could sleep hard. It did not have to be dealt with. He really did not go to the bathroom to deal with it. The small restraint had nothing heroic about it. It only let Xu Siyi close her eyes more safely in the dark.

The thirtieth day was a Thursday. The Saturday in Jiaxing had not yet come. The two of them were washing dishes in the kitchen. Xu Siyi washed. Chen Hao rinsed. The water was loud. They still heard each other's breathing.

Xu Siyi spoke first. "On Saturday I've decided not to go. Not because I'm obeying your opinion. Because I myself don't want to soak a story that has already been sealed back into tea. I think of them. The thinking is still here. But thinking isn't the same as having to meet. I tore the address up. My hand shook while I tore it. After it shook, I still tore it. If you're disappointed, say so now."

The bowl in Chen Hao's hand stopped. "I'm not disappointed. I'm a little empty. Empty and disappointed aren't the same thing. Empty is that the possible door is gone. After the door is gone, I'm clearer that I'm standing in this kitchen. Thank you for telling me. If you tore it because of my jealousy, I would be uneasy."

"Not because of your jealousy." Xu Siyi passed him the last plate. "Because in these thirty days I've already told you the hardest sentences. There is nothing in a teahouse that needs me more than that. If they go, they'll find we aren't there. Not being there is also an answer. The rules said absence doesn't need an explanation."

Chen Hao put the plate in the rack. Water dripped onto the top of his foot. This time he remembered the bath mat and turned to spread it. Xu Siyi saw it and did not praise him. Praise would have turned a thing that ought to be done into a performance. She only walked over and held him from behind. Her face was against his back. The tooth mark had faded long ago, faded until only she knew the place. She kissed that place once.

"The marriage is still the two of us," she said. "The way it is now is this. Neither of us treats the other as property. Neither of us brings someone else's bed into this kitchen. We can think, we can say it, we can refuse, we can do it on the sofa with the light on. We are not going to Jiaxing. We also will not pretend Qingdao was only a piece of weather."

Chen Hao's hand covered hers. "I agree with this shape. I'm still your husband. You're still my wife. Not because no one has touched us. Because after we were touched, we still chose this lamp."

The rain outside had stopped. Shanghai's night was noisy. Downstairs someone was calling a name for a food delivery. Xu Siyi let him go, poured milk into the pot, and got ready to heat it. Halfway through pouring she stopped and looked back at him.

"Tomorrow is Saturday. There is no teahouse. If you want to go out, we walk on Huaihai Road. While we walk you can hold my hand. Ask me before you take it. I may be willing. I may also have my hands in my pockets. Both count."

"Then I'll ask tomorrow," Chen Hao said.

The milk heated slowly in the pot. A ring of fine bubbles rose at the edge. Xu Siyi looked at the bubbles and laughed, very lightly. The laugh was not because she had forgotten. It was because in a life there were still things that would spill if you did not watch them. Chen Hao stood beside her and did not turn the flame up. He remembered she had said that speeding up was not a rope. Some things had to go at the speed she could bear.

At night they lay in bed, and neither mentioned the two facing rooms again. The body still remembered the distance from door to door. Remembered ten meters of corridor. Remembered twelve o'clock. Xu Siyi put her face into her husband's shoulder and smelled only the laundry detergent of home. She said a very light sentence.

"The key cards were returned."

"They were returned," Chen Hao answered.

"And the people?"

"The people are here."

Xu Siyi's fingers locked between his. Locked tight, then loosened a little, leaving a gap for blood to move. That gap was the definition she was willing to give the marriage now. Not locked shut. Not thrown open. Two people still here, able at any time to say stop, and able at any time to say they still wanted it.

Shanghai's lights burned outside the curtain all night. The sea sounded on its own in the north. Whether the same conversation was happening in a walk-up in Hangzhou, they no longer went to verify. The door of the thirty days had shut. It had not shut prettily. It had shut clearly. Clear was already enough for two people in their thirties to sleep until daylight in an old bed, and, after daylight, still know each other's names.
