It was the middle of the night but I could swear something woke me up. I glanced across the room to see Mila's sleeping form, softly snoring under her thin blankets.
There were no night time experiments scheduled for either of us last night, so we had the chance to sleep in the same room for a change.
I quietly climbed out of bed, staying low while I lifted the mattress. It’s where I kept the knife I stole.
Then I heard it again. Someone was accessing our sleeping quarters. But at this time of night? Why?
I held my breath as the door slowly swung open. I watched as a large man walked in wearing a Facility issued uniform. His back was to me as he made a beeline for Mila’s bed. I snuck up behind him and pressed the knife to his back.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” I hissed.
The man didn’t answer. He stood there with his back to me looking down at Mila. His breathing was getting heavier and I couldn't tell if it was from fear or not.
The whole situation was making me uncomfortable.
“Get away from her,” I growled. “Leave before I carve out your kidney.”
He took one step and then another towards the door. I stayed close to his back with the knife pressed into him just enough so he knew I meant business.
Once we were in the hallway, I stopped. “Turn around,” I commanded.
He hesitated before turning to face me. I didn’t recognize anything about him except the uniform. I don't think I'd ever seen him before.
He had green stripes on the sleeves of his jumpsuit which told me he worked in maintenance.
“What are you doing sneaking into our sleeping quarters?” I demanded.
He looked at me with blank, ugly brown eyes. He didn’t answer me, just continued to stare. Then I looked down and noticed his erection.
“You disgusting piece of shit!"
Rage consumed me as I lunged towards him and stabbed him in the groin. I was aiming for his dirty pedophile dick, but severing his femoral artery was good enough for me.
He groaned as he sank to the ground and I watched him bleed out slowly. Once I was sure he was dead, I went back inside, washed my hands, and crawled back into my bed.
I lay staring at the ceiling for the rest of the night, keeping watch over my baby sister. It didn’t phase me that I’d killed a grown man and left him in the middle of the hall outside our door.
I swore to myself a long time ago that I’d do anything it took to protect Mila.
The next morning in the dining hall, everyone around us was buzzing with gossip about the dead man that was found in the hallway.
I didn’t say a word as I ate the disgusting powdered eggs and drank the small carton of milk that we were given. Mila slept through everything that happened last night. She had no idea what I did.
We walked out and down the long hallway, hand in hand as usual, towards the laboratory. To a stranger, Mila looked perfectly normal, just as she did every day.
But she was my person, and I could tell something was weighing on her mind.
Mila shrugged but didn’t comment.
I pulled her to a stop in the middle of the hall and gazed into her green eyes. “Talk to me,” I demanded.
She glanced down at her shoes before meeting my eyes again and I could see the shame. “That guy they were talking about, the one who was found dead?” she said.
She began to nervously pick the skin around her thumb. Anxiety was radiating off of her and I could feel the power in her core building with her emotions.
“He comes into our room at night sometimes?” I guessed.
She froze, staring at me with wide eyes as I continued softly. “He stands over your bed and stares at you when you’re sleeping? Should I go on?”
“Problem solved,” I said with a shrug, giving her a knowing look.
She gazed at me for a moment until she finally realized what I was saying. She gave me a hug and squeezed me as tight as she could before releasing me. No words were needed; she understood what I did to protect her.
Mila and I were both quiet as we continued on with our daily duties around the Facility, but I couldn’t ignore the look of relief behind her eyes.
Did I feel bad about it? Also no.
Later that day, we were standing with a group of scientists when I saw a man in a maintenance uniform. I slipped away and walked over to confront him.
“Did you know?” I asked, not wasting any time.
“Know what?” he asked cautiously, glancing around to see if anyone was listening.
“Did you know that he had been sneaking into our sleeping quarters at night?”
“Of course not,” he replied. “How could I have known that?”
The lie was obvious the minute it rolled out of his mouth.
“Are there more?” I asked. His face paled and his eyes widened but he didn’t answer me.
“Just know,” I said softly as I leaned closer to him, not breaking eye contact. “The same thing will happen to anyone else I catch sneaking into our room or trying to touch me or Mila.”
He nodded and pushed his maintenance cart away down the hall as quickly as he could, not daring to glance back.

### Chapter 2: Chapter 2
Once the door came down and our straps were secure, the car sped off automatically down the rails. These quad cars can take you anywhere in the Facility, but it's strictly forbidden to access this specific line without authorization.
This is the only line that led outside of the Facility.
In order to power the quad car, you needed iris scans of two authorized staff members as well as key cards and codes. All trips were logged and reported daily to higher headquarters to ensure there was no unauthorized use.
When we finally came to a stop it was in front of a cave entrance. We looked out over an empty landscape filled with nothing but a few sparse trees and shrubs as far as the eye could see.
We stepped aside and waited for the white coats to join us. Our quad car sped off as the next one arrived with the last of the scientists.
To absolutely no one's surprise, Doctor Koslov was along for the ride.
I felt Mila stiffen at my side. Doctor Koslov was a tall, thin man with no hair on his face or head. He was the director of operations at the Facility. His stormy gray eyes were magnified by the circular glasses he wore perched on the end of his nose.
He always wore a black turtleneck shirt under his white lab coat and his hands were always clasped behind his back as he studied everyone around him with a cold, calculating precision.
His stare was the stuff of nightmares. It made you feel two inches tall and full of shame even if you didn’t do anything wrong.
I gripped Mila’s hand as she started trembling. Dr. Koslov being here could only mean one thing.
“I’m coming with you,” I said in an attempt to reassure her. I was determined not to let her do this alone.
“This time, I’m afraid that’s not possible, Masha,” Doctor Koslov interrupted me. “If you go with her, you will taint the results when you absorb the blast. I want to know what her true radius is. We have sensors set out around us in a five mile perimeter. Mila,” he gestured to her. “Step forward twenty paces.”
She squeezed my hand before letting go and walking away. I tried to follow, but the collar around my neck tightened painfully, crushing my windpipe and cutting off my air supply.
I moved back to where I started with a growl of frustration. One of the white coats stepped forward and took a small golden key from his pocket.
He unlocked her golden collar before retreating to the bank of computers along the back wall. The concrete bay doors closed, leaving only a few small viewing holes to see through.
I seethed with rage, watching as Mila stopped and took a deep breath. I could see the glow starting in her hands.
Her fingertips began to glow faintly. Within seconds the swirling, iridescent purple mist began to seep from her palms, winding up her arms until her whole body was eventually consumed in it.
Then she began to glow. Her light grew brighter and brighter as she left the ground, hovering a few feet over the spot she stopped at. I could feel the power emanating from her, calling to my own.
With the collar on, I could still sense the depth of Mila’s power. But when it’s removed and there’s nothing holding her in check...
I turned to the scientists all huddled around Doctor Koslov and watched as they looked on in sickening anticipation.
I felt the world grow still just before Mila detonated.
The blast took out every tree and shrub in front of her. Silence fell all around us. Not even the wind was brave enough to pass through the absolute destruction Mila left in her wake as her feet came to rest on the ground again.
As the alarm blared and the cement doors began to open again, Mila didn’t wait for permission before she sprinted back to me and grabbed my hand.
Her heated, glowing skin seared mine, raw power still lingering inside of her. Her forest green eyes were completely hidden within the undulating deep purple glow.
Her head swung around as she panicked, taking in our immediate surroundings trying to ascertain where she was before focusing on the devastation she caused once more.
I stood in front of her, my hands on each side of her face as I forced her focus onto me. I absorbed what I could, trying to help her regain her internal balance until my own power began to spill over.
Mila closed her eyes, taking deep breaths as I watched the collar snap back into place around her throat. When she opened them again, her terrified green eyes stared back at me.
This was only the second time in our lives they forced Mila to loose the full extent of her power, a curse placed upon her by the team of monsters acting upon the orders of Dr. Koslov.
I glared at the white coats, waiting for them to say something. The woman pulled out a small tablet from her pocket and tapped the screen a few times. Her eyes grew wide as she reviewed the numbers before she handed the results over to Doctor Koslov.
“I did it,” he whispered triumphantly to himself. He turned to Mila with a smug grin. “You maxed out all of the sensors from here to the perimeter and beyond. Next time we will have to-”
“There won’t be a next time,” I yelled at him, unable to keep quiet any longer. I took a step in front of Mila, squaring my shoulders against them defensively.
Doctor Koslov turned his condescending look towards me and patted my head like he used to when I was a small child. It only served to irritate me more.
Without another word, we were ushered back into the quad cars and taken back to the Facility and straight to the laboratory for blood samples to be drawn.
Later that night as we were dressing for bed, I watched Mila and I could see the lines of exhaustion evident on her face.
“We have to get out of here,” I said.
She froze with the toothbrush mid stroke, but I carried on. “I won’t let them do that to you ever again. We are people, dammit!” I pounded my fist on my bed for emphasis.
“We’ll never escape,” Mila said with sadness. “We are literally stuck here until we die.”
“I have an idea,” I said with a sly smile.
