## Prologue: Artemis

Polish: Shinya Scans: Sleepless Night Retouch: Ice Grellier

(When Izanagi washed his left eye, Amaterasu Ōmikami was born from that left eye. He then washed his right eye, and Tsukuyomi was born from the right eye. Next he washed his nose, and from his nose Susanoo was born.) (abridged) At this, Izanagi was overjoyed, and said, “I have borne many children, and at last I have finally gained three noble offspring.”

“Mwahahaha—I’m alive again————!”

In the grand shrine on Moonview Island, ringed by Lake Tsukinose, a beauty of striking grace and commanding presence drained a can of beer in one gulp and broke into wild laughter. The smell of alcohol spreading through the air made the priests gathered around her knit their brows, yet she herself seemed not the least bit aware of it.

“Larissa, fetch me another can. A good beer after work is one of life’s great pleasures!”

She crushed the can with a sharp crunch and spoke at her ease.

“Lady Artemis…”

The full-figured shrine maiden shook her head and sighed. Her flying golden hair glittered beneath the early-summer sun.

“Honestly.”

Her name was Larissa Franklin. She now served as shrine maiden to the wild goddess before her—the woman who presently stood at the very peak of the Shinto priesthood in Japan.

Larissa let out only a small sigh, then pulled herself together once more…

## Chapter One: Boy Meet Goddess

“…My lord… Lord Yomi.”

Called by several attendants, the man slowly opened his eyes.

“How long did I sleep?”

“A full week.”

One of the attendants answered.

The man rose from the bed and gave a small yawn. His long silver hair shone in the candlelight, pale and clear as moonlight. The face glimpsed in the dark was less neatly handsome than fluid and lovely—strikingly beautiful.

“This won’t do. For some reason, whenever I fall into a vision and see that old seal, I just keep sleeping.”

“It cannot be helped. It has only been a year since you descended to this place once more.”

“Don’t worry about me. How is Ōtsuki City?”

“They say the Wind God’s seal is about to come undone.”

Another attendant answered with deference. Satisfied with that answer, the man nodded.

“Good. That means Kogetsu Town will only grow more important. In my vision I saw a demon god manifest. Are the preparations already in place? By our plan, the chance that a myth-class demon god will ultimately be born is extremely high.”

“Please set your mind at ease. My father is looking after things at the shrine. In his daughter’s eyes he’s hopelessly unreliable, but his love for this country is genuine. And now, just as the seed of a demon god is descending, Father has prepared two separate plans to meet it.”

A girl in uniform pushed through the attendants, stepped forward, and spoke with firm resolve.

Seeing the girl, the man answered her with a gentle smile, then stood as he drew on his hunting robe and thrust his hand into a great vat brimming with water.

Five blurred figures rose from the water one after another, hazy…

## Chapter Two: Together with My New Big Sister

In the morning, Kitakata Takeru did not rise especially early.

The moment he crawled under the covers he could fall asleep, and sleep deeply at that. Perhaps because of that constitution, he woke on his own the instant it turned seven. From here to Kogetsu Public High School was only about a fifteen-minute walk, so Takeru had time to spare for lingering in bed.

Which was why, as a rule, Otome did not come to wake him.

Otome’s mornings were no different from a housewife’s: packing lunches for the two of them, taking out the trash, sometimes doing the laundry, sometimes cleaning—busy from start to finish. She did not even have time to call Takeru out of bed.

Until now—

“…Hn.”

Takeru groaned.

The moment he opened his eyes, he felt breath brush his ear. What was going on? Wondering, he turned onto his side and found Otome, already changed into her uniform, lying beside him. What was more, the front of her uniform was gaping open at the chest, as if she meant for someone to see.

“Sis, what are you doing?”

“Admiring my beloved little brother’s peaceful sleeping face, and his breathing.”

Light blazed in Otome’s eyes, glittering with happiness.

“If I take a hundred steps back… no, ten thousand steps back, that is, for the moment, a reason… but why did you crawl into your little brother’s futon?!”

“Because your big sister wants to draw all of Takeru’s body heat into her own body. In a certain sense, you could call it a brother-and-sister union ❤”

Ugh. If he had to put a face to it, that was exactly the expression he was wearing now. So Takeru thought.

“Hey. What was all that last night? You ran back to your own room in tears, didn’t you?”

“Mm.”

“What do you mean, ‘mm’? That’s way too big a gap…”

## Chapter Three: The Edict of Rain and Wind

Kogetsu Public High School was the only high school in Kogetsu Town. It stood beside the great stair that led up toward Lake Tsukinose, floating in the sky, and it was a school of considerable size.

Artemis lived on Moonview Island in Lake Tsukinose, at Yurien Shrine—which meant this school lay under Yurien Shrine’s jurisdiction.

At present, nearly half of the gods who had only recently descended again were attending Kogetsu High. They studied, and at the same time they gathered people’s faith. In truth, because gods descended again every day, the total number of gods across the three grades had already passed five hundred.

For the “Kogetsu Plan” carried out by Artemis and Larissa, this school was indispensable.

And so today, too, new gods were enrolling.

Two gods at once were transferring into Class 1-C.

What was more, one of them was the goddess who had been the first to form a bond of faith with Kitakata Takeru—little brother of Kitakata Otome, the school’s model student, and himself its resident delinquent.

Of course, even before Takeru and Teruhime Otome set out for school together, the campus was already buzzing.

“What is this? Everybody’s staring at us through the classroom windows.”

Once they were on the grounds, Takeru tipped his head back in surprise and looked up at the school building.

“Gods transfer in every day, don’t they? What’s the point of still being curious at this stage?”

“You don’t get it, Takeru. Let them look.”

Otome shrugged.

“Speaking of which, Takeru, look after Teruhime properly! Protect her!”

“I know. This one is less reliable, less useful, and slower on the uptake than any god we’ve met before.”

“So long as you know.”

Otome nodded…

## Chapter Four: Matters Between Brother and Sister Q

Thursday. A cloudless sky, and a blazing sun.

It was only just June—yet on a day that ought to have been early summer, as if in celebration of the pool’s opening, the sun poured down a merciless, dazzling light,

and made today as hot as the height of summer.

“Mmm~ Looks like Teruhime’s prayer finally came true.”

It was lunch break. Seated on the grass, Teruhime gazed at the sky with a beaming smile.

“A prayer—whoa!”

Just as Takeru was about to ask Teruhime again, Otome forcibly stuffed a baby octopus sausage into his mouth.

“Mmph—wh-what are you doing, Sis!”

“Nothing at all. Your big sister just doesn’t want to be ignored by Takeru~”

Otome squirmed as she said it.

“It’s hot.”

Takeru turned to Teruhime again.

“This ‘prayer’ of yours—does it mean borrowing the power of some god?”

“Eh? Ah… of course it means asking a teru teru bōzu. Changing the weather is something even Lady Artemis can’t do.”

Teruhime answered as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Even so…

Then again, since Lady Artemis was a goddess of the moon, it seemed she could alter the night’s weather a little, for the sake of moon-viewing.

In other words, when it came to changing the weather, even the lofty Lady Artemis could manage only a change of that degree.

Gods who could change the weather—who could call the wind and summon the rain—were overwhelmingly powerful. That kind of ability belonged only to the VIPs.

“But… just hanging up one teru teru bōzu, and the sky stays…”

## Final Chapter: The Moon and the Lilies, All Sticky

“So you’re saying the plan failed completely?”

In the dim room, the man dressed in suikan and kariginu spoke calmly. Not a trace of anger showed on his face.

“Y-yes… I am truly, deeply sorry! We were only one step from the birth of two pillars of demon gods… but it was all because Artemis and that god who had only just descended again got in the way.”

The speaker was Yoshimi. She had already changed out of her school uniform into shrine-maiden robes, and she was kneeling in formal obeisance.

“Moriya Yoshimi. The Edict of Rain and Wind lodging in your house is Takehaya Susanoo no Mikoto, and Teruhime of the Sun is Amaterasu Ōmikami. That is correct, is it not?”

“Yes, my lord. Beneath the divine majesty of Takehaya Susanoo no Mikoto and Artemis I could not act, but I was still able to grasp the situation in outline… Yes. Those two are indeed Takehaya Susanoo no Mikoto and Amaterasu Ōmikami.”

“Hoh…”

The man nodded and sank into thought. With that small motion, his silver hair, falling like a cascade, stirred slightly, flashing in the gloom of the room, dazzling as moonlight.

“On the whole, nothing fell outside my expectations… and yet a few gaps still appeared.”

The man clapped his hands once.

Then, as if he had stepped out of the darkness from nowhere at all, a silver-haired boy appeared.

“Hyakkimaru. Both sisters, Flame and Wind, have ended in failure.”

“So they have. At the same time, though, I have found a rather interesting piece.”

Everyone present, and everything present—whether person, or wind, or light, or object—held the man in deep awe…

## Afterword

Hello, everyone. I’m Tachibana Pan.

I have been writing the series *I Just Can’t Do H Things!* at the kind invitation of Fujimi Fantasia Bunko. Then, all of a sudden, I received an invitation from Ichijinsha and began writing this book. It left me awed, full of feeling, and deeply grateful. Drunk on my own importance. That last idiom was a complete mistake!

As for how I first came to write this work at Ichijinsha’s invitation, I have Twitter to thank.

I was chatting with Minosaki Jun-sensei in a way that was more or less a secret meeting with a woman, when T-zawa-sama suddenly said that if I had the time, I should write this for him. It was like sneaking off during a school trip and getting caught red-handed—both Minosaki-sensei and I got a scolding…

So, like a shared world, this work and *Divine Flame Kagura: The Godfire That Fell in Love and the Sword That Lost Its Magic*, written by Minosaki-sensei (my book and that book also went on sale the same day), use the same setting.

No—rather, I thought that if it were the sort of story you get in a TRPG, sharing a world would be interesting, and so, at T-zawa-sama’s command, I entered this novel’s service.

But when I set my own humble work, *Sister Goddess! 1 — The First God: My Sister and a Goddess and My Underwear*, beside *Divine Flame Kagura: The Godfire That Fell in Love and the Sword That Lost Its Magic*, I cannot help wanting to complain about how on earth these two are supposed to share a world. It is really something.

To be specific, I should say that I first set down a rough world of my own, and then…
